The aim of TestFreaks.com is to collect product reviews from everywhere, eventually all product reviews will be aggregated by us and incorporated into our main site. The premise or idea behind this is to collect these reviews and average them out to provide a score that a user can understand when trying to find more information about a product. We also collect user reviews as well, so the average consumer can see and learn what people just like him or her have to say about a product.

It’s December, the end of the year basically, and we’ve collected the top products from our categories on the main site to show you the best of the best this year according to how you and the professionals rated them. The first up is cell phones, we’ve reviewed a few cell phones here at TestFreaks, but we all know there are plenty more out there, here’s the top five phones for 2008 as rated by users and professionals.

Review Snipit:
“Icy Dock has sent me over quite a little ingenious product, it takes any 2.5″ hard drive and essentially turns it into a 3.5″ one. This can come in handy for many things including of course using it inside of your PC, or even inside of an external enclosure, the Icy Dock Convertor can make your 2.5″ drive go anywhere a 3.5″ can. “

Thanks to these inputs and some internal magic from Samsung, the display even doubles as a 1080p television. The T260HD is, unquestionably, irresistible, inside and out. The high-definition monitor cum television not only looks stunning thanks to its glossy piano black finish, curvaceous bezel and funky clear plastic edging, but picture quality and features are equally up to the task. If you have a small living room where you want a television and a computer display, but don’t have room for both, the T260HD is for you.”

NEW CONTENT (Motherboards) - Albatron Mini-ITX Evolves – KI780G On Display

QUOTE: “Albatron are no strangers to Mini-ITX, in fact we have already tested a couple of boards from them on a Mini-ITX format, including a Socket 754 based and an AM2 based board. Today, however, they are raising the stakes just a little higher. Phenom may not be the highest clocking kid on the block and it can’t keep up with Intel on a clock-for-clock basis with Core 2, let alone Core i7, but where AMD lacks in the enthusiast market, they do have the goods in the power friendly market. Not only that, a top clocking Phenom X4 processor can also be had for cheap now.

Today Albatron have sent us their Mini-ITX KI780G board based around AMD’s very popular IGP chipset, the 780G. Let’s see just how well it’s able to perform compared to VIA’s Nano platform.”

The AMD 790FX was a solid platform, but for many boards, including one MSI 790FX board we looked at earlier this year, struggled a bit on the overclocking side of things. Fooling around with the MSI DKA790GX Platinum for the last couple weeks has certainly showed us the newer SB750 South Bridge has improved on this a lot. The South Bridge aside though, what else does this AMD board show us?

“From a performance standpoint, the MSI DKA790GX performed on par with the 790FX in a stock speed scenario. Overclocking tells a different tale as the 790GX was a very good overclocker. The new SB750 South Bridge is a lot more stable in this department and for those of you looking to squeeze more out of their CPU, you will want to think about this if you’re due for a motherboard upgrade.”

QUOTE: “While we like to look at all the high-end motherboards at TweakTown, we also like to focus on some of the smaller, more budget oriented choices that come to the scene. Summary: “With the EXT4 file-system being marked as stable in the forthcoming Linux 2.6.28 kernel, and some Linux distributions potentially switching to it as an interim step until the btrfs file-system is ready, we decided it was time to benchmark this journaled file-system for ourselves. We ran a number of disk-centric Linux benchmarks along with several of our real-world tests from the Phoronix Test Suite to gauge how well the EXT4 file-system performance will be noticed by desktop users and computer gamers. We have compared these EXT4 results to the EXT3, XFS, and ReiserFS file-systems.”

Article Brief:
For those who missed it, the HD4870 X2 is essentially two HD4870s
operating in Crossfire mode, albeit on a single card. And as if the
original wasn’t already huge enough, Palit has super-sized the HD4870 x2.
What it calls the Revolution R700 Deluxe takes up a grand total of 3
slots.

QNAP Unveils TS-509 Pro Firmware Upgrade
Supports AES 256-bit volume-based encryption, built-in iSCSI target service and more

Taipei, Taiwan, December 2008 - QNAP Systems, Inc. today unveils the new firmware version 2.1.0 for the high performance TS-509 Pro Turbo NAS to support iSCSI target service and a number of security solutions, e.g. AES 256-bit volume-based encryption, automatic policy-based IP blocking, instant SMS alert, and the powerful Surveillance Station for live video monitoring and recording of up to 4 network cameras.

The new firmware of the TS-509 Pro has brought a number of benefits to the business users, specifically cost-effective and flexible storage expansion as well as secure data protection. The built-in iSCSI target service with Thin Provisioning on the NAS enables the server administrator to create up to 8 iSCSI devices for expanding the storage capacity of the existing application servers on the network, e.g. database server, mail server, or configuring the NAS as the backup destination of these servers. To meet the demand for high security data protection of the business users, the TS-509 Pro now supports AES 256-bit volume-based encryption. The encrypted disk volumes of the NAS must be unlocked by the encryption password to be accessed, which eliminates the fear of confidential data leakage if the hard drives or the NAS were stolen.

“The high performance and rich features of the TS-509 Pro are widely recognized and awarded by the worldwide media. By upgrading the NAS to version 2.1.0, the administrator can make use of the Thin Provisioning feature of the iSCSI target service for flexible allocation of the storage space to the application servers regardless of the actual storage capacity of the NAS. When more storage space is required in the future, the administrator can increase the storage capacity of the NAS by Online RAID Capacity Expansion or re-allocate the disk space assigned to the application servers. The TS-509 Pro is an ideal cost-efficient IP-SAN (Storage Area Network) solution for the business users,” said James Wu, Product Manager from QNAP.

New features supported by the TS-509 Pro firmware version 2.1.0:

AES 256-bit volume-based encryption to enhance secure data protection

Up to 8 built-in iSCSI targets with Thin Provisioning feature for flexible storage expansion or backup destination of the application servers on the network.

Automatic policy-based IP blocking to prevent unwanted intrusion or hacking

Instant SMS/ email alert upon system errors or warning

Surveillance Station, monitoring and recording from up to 4 network cameras

Volume status report

Advanced FTP write-only access

SSL secure certificate

Syslog server

USB UPS function upgrade

“Puzzle games are simple to play, addictive and can be picked up quickly and put down easily. That is why games such as Tetris and Bejeweled are cell phone staples. The Nintendo DS platform is great for puzzle games due to its dual screen and touch interface. Midway decided to take advantage of this design with its latest puzzler – Mechanic Master. “

“Despite the capabilities to satisfy even the most hardcore gamer, the G71 is just as adept at running resource intensive Windows Vista applications, such as image and video-editing programs. If you’re looking for a truly dedicated gaming experience within a highly portable package, this badboy is just the ticket. In fact, we’d go so far as to say it’s one of the best overall gaming laptops on the planet - especially considering ASUS’ aggressive pricing. Alienware still has the upper hand in terms of raw power and customisation (the G71 can’t be customised with CrossFire graphics cards or solid state drives for instance), but as an overall package the G71 it is hard to beat. It even runs so cool and quietly that you’ll hardly notice it’s even on! Our only disappointment is lack of support for nVidia’s flagship GeForce 9800M GTX graphics chipset.”

“Today we are looking at the Philips amBX Premium kit. The first time we heard of amBX is was a large system that took advantage of the heating and cooling system in your home.
Philips scaled the system back significantly and is now selling it as a speaker system for PC gamers. Read on for all of the details on the Philips amBX Premium Kit.”

InsideHW.com has posted article about XFX GTX260 Black Edition (GX-260N-ADB9) graphics card. You can read a clip from review:

“As announced, nVIDIA presented new GTX260 with larger amount of Stream Processors. This is consequence of the facts that regular GTX260 didn’t have expected performances levels and price was too high compared to similar products on the market. Simply put GTX260 was very fast but since Radeon HD 4870 had better performance/price ratio nVIDIA had to do something and as result we have GTX260+. Difference between GTX260 and GTX260+ is in 24 Stream Processors so GTX260 has 192 SP and GTX260+ has 216 SP. This time we got GTX260+ graphics card signed by XFX that belong to their Black Edition series…”

QUOTE: “It was not that long ago that we all got excited about 2GB and 4GB pen drives, but as flash memory continued to develop and become cheaper, we continually saw improvements in the amount of storage space we see in portable devices.

Only a short while ago the usual suspects started releasing 32GB pen drives, but that portable storage milestone was short-lived – and has since been smashed. Patriot Memory continues to push the boundaries by releasing one of the first high-performance 64GB pen drives to the market, just in time to be a stocking filler or ideal geeky gift for Christmas this year.”

Quote: Topower is about affordability and capability. Topower manages to do
an excellent job balancing price and performance. While there are cheaper
power supplies available, and at the same time better performing power
supplies available, Topower has managed to reach an equilibrium.

————————————————

The PC gaming industry has seen many graphics chips come and go. Companies like 3dfx, S3, Trident, Intel, nVidia, ATI and others have tapped into the gaming industry and have produced 3d accellerators for the PC, and most of them have gone. There are only two major players in the PC graphics industry: nVidia and ATI.

These two graphics juggernauts unveil new products every year, which effectively doubles the effective processing power over the previous generation. This ruthless competition is both good and bad news for consumers: Good in that faster technology becomes cheaper, and we have many options. Bad in that the expensive video card you just purchased will remain bleeding edge for only a few months.

The latest battle comes just in time for the 2008 holiday season. ATI’s 4800 series goes up against nVidia’s GTX line of cards. Sapphire is one of the more well-known manufacturers of ATI-based video cards, and they have a secret weapon in the world of single-GPU video cards. Their 4870 Toxic video card not only comes pre-overclocked, but is stacked with 512MB of the fastest GDDR5 memory, which is certainly enough for today’s gamer.

Fuze Review

I remember holding the AT&T Tilt in my hand for the first time and thinking what an excellent device. I finally felt that we could officially call a phone a true “Converged Device”. One year later, the AT&T Tilt Replacement came knocking at the door. This device would have some significant design changes, a little more horsepower under the hood, and a fresh new VGA screen. AT&T would call this new device, The Fuze. Based on the HTC Touch Pro, or Raphael, The Fuze had big shoes to fill with the AT&T Tilt. How would this new device that is called the Fuze measure up to the Tilt? All that and more as we fully review the new AT&T Fuze (P4600), so read on and we’ll begin!

Review Snipit:
“Today I’ve got the HTC Fuze for review, it’s the new Windows Mobile based phone from AT&T, this phone goes by a few names and there are quite a few variations of it floating around the cellular networks right now. I’m sure by this point most of you know this phone, it’s been hyped for quite a while, but is it worth the hype? Is it really all that? “
