Press Release: Pay-TV Set Top Box shipments on target for 40% growth

July 23rd, 2008 by Kristofer

Pay-TV Set Top Box on target for 40% growth

Global shipments of Pay-TV Set Top Boxes (STBs) are on track to grow by nearly 40% by 2012 according to a new Industry Update Report from Futuresource Consulting. This represents an increase of 38M units, with growth derived from new subscribers and consumers trading up to STBs with Personal Video Recording (PVR) functionality and High Definition (HD) capability.

“Pay-TV operators around the world continue to use STBs to drive digital services, increase ARPU and reduce subscriber churn,” says Carl Hibbert of Futuresource Consulting, “with innovations such as High Definition, PVR, VoD and Home Networking.”

This competitive ‘technology push’ from the Pay-TV industry and the continued importance of content security will maintain the stability of the STB industry for at least the next two to three years, despite the wider availability of TVs with open interfaces like CableCARD and CI+, and increasing trends towards CE product connectivity into Pay-TV networks.

24K Gold Plated 8GB Pico USB Drive is World’s Smallest

San Jose, California – July 15, 2008 – Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today announced the PICO-C Gold, a 24-carat gold plated, water resistant USB drive that weighs less than a nickel (~4.7 grams), is smaller than an SD card, and can store over 2,000 MP3 songs.

Super Talent uses chip-on-board (COB) technology to squeeze 8GB of Flash into an impressively small 31.3mm x 12.4mm x 3.4mm gold plated steel case. The Pico-C Gold is shock resistant, water resistant, and has up to 200X (30MB/sec) transfer speeds. The Pico-C Gold includes a sturdy gold chain, and looks more like a fashion accessory than a high performance Flash drive.

“Is it the speed, the ruggedness, the water resistance, the incredibly tiny size or the pure elegance that people like most in our Pico-C drive? Who knows? But, this combination of features and style is not offered in any other terrestrial storage device, which makes it a real craze”, commented Super Talent Marketing Director, Joe James.

All Super Talent USB drives are backed with a lifetime warranty. The 8GB Pico-C Gold drive, part number STU8GPCG, is available from NewBiiz and NewEgg today for under $40.

July 15th, 2008 by Kristofer

The CE marking is a mandatory European marking for NAS products to indicate conformity with the essential health and safety requirements set out in European Directives. Thecus products are evaluated by a Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF) certified independent test laboratory. CE Verifications of Compliance are issued in order to apply CE marking on Thecus products. Those verifications are to document that Thecus products meet the relevant requirements, eg, emission and immunity standards.

Thecus 1U4500 series is one of the products that received CE marking (comply with CE standards EN 60950-1:2001+A11:2004 and IEC 60950-1:2001). In addition to the CE standards, in February 2008, Thecus contracted a TAF/ Chinese National Laboratory Accreditation (CNLA) certified independent laboratory to conduct the reliability test on 1U4500 to verify its performance under extreme conditions. The test items included shock test, initial random vibration test and extended random vibration test (all International Electrotechnical Commission, IEC, & International Organization for Standardization, ISO, certified). The results indicated that 1U4500 operated normally under unfavorable operating environment. These test results comply with several unique Australian and European qualifications.

Press Release: One Third of Consumers Are Copying DVDs

July 9th, 2008 by Kristofer

Following the recent Consumer Home Piracy market research survey carried out by Futuresource Consulting in the USA (sample size 3,613) and the UK (sample size (1,718), I’ve attached the resulting findings for your attention, I do hope this of interest to you. The study follows on from similar research carried out in 2007, so year on year comparisons can be made showing the changing consumer behaviours in home copying.

In particular:

  • around one third of all respondents in both countries admitted to making copies of pre-recorded DVDs in the last six months, including many recent blockbuster titles on DVD.
  • 18-24 year old males are most likely to copy DVDs
  • UK respondents showed a significant increase in copying TV shows on DVD
  • If respondents had been unable to make copies of DVDs, 63% in the UK and 77% in the USA said they would have purchased all, some or at least a few of the titles, clearly showing the scale of the lost revenues to the home video industry.
