10,000 BC DVD Review & Podcast @ Ascully.com

Quote
“I had no expectations of 10,000 BC. I did have Apocalypto in my mind, which was excellent. I love to look back at that time in human history before the assholes of civilization decided to start ripping the world apart with their commerce and desire for gold.”

NEW CONTENT (Digital Lounge) - Men In Black HD Movie Review
QUOTE: “To properly review Men In Black, one most cast their mind back to the time in which it was produced. The year is 1997. Hollywood audiences were enjoying the resurgence of the summer blockbuster and the reinvention of the disaster and science fiction flicks. The special editions of the Star Wars Trilogy put the science fiction genre back in front. Will Smith was also coming off the back of the massive hit the previous year; Independence Day.
Men In Black arrived after a hugely successful ad campaign that ensured that the film would be nothing other than a massive hit. Even the films tie-in theme song of the same name, performed by Will Smith was a worldwide hit, charting at number one in Australia.”

Charlie Bartlett DVD Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“Charlie Bartlett is one of those films that looks really funny in the previews, and then when you get into the thick of the film, it’s not really that funny. I liked this movie, and I really liked the acting, but I just didn’t think that the story was right. It is like the film couldn’t decide whether to be funny or serious, and being stuck half-way in between the two got a bit old.”

The Spiderwick Chronicles 2 Disc Field Guide Edition DVD & Blu-Ray Disc Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“I do believe in some things I can’t see, like fate, love, the IRS, and the internet. Are these things legend, myth, or reality that remains hidden in the shadows of our world? We could spend centuries exploring the vast possibilities of these wondrous wisps of imagination, but for now I’ll just move on to something a bit more realistic like faeries and goblins.”

Control DVD Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“Control is Anton Corbijn’s film about the life of Ian Curtis, of the Manchester Band Joy Division, which was in existence from 1976 until 1980. Corbijn, who is best known as a music photographer and video maker, chose to make this biopic due to the fact that Joy Division was a huge influence in his life. Corbijn describes in one of the extras that upon first hearing Joy Division, he packed his bags and moved from Holland to London, to be close to the spot where Joy Division was making this style of music. Two weeks into the move, he was backstage and met the band, where a friendship with the band was created. …”

Fools Gold DVD Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“Fool’s Gold was a pleasant surprise. There, I said it. I had to do some soul searching and life evaluating to write this review. That’s what this movie did for me. Well, not the movie itself, it’s not THAT kind of good. It’s fun good. It’s entertaining good. It’s good enough to make me wonder if a fluffy romantic comedy flick now and then wouldn’t be such a drain of my precious time. The conclusion, Fool’s Gold didn’t make me want to go find a mad scientist, invent a time machine, and go get those 2 hours of my life back, no. That’s a compliment folks, just in case you are not following my train of thought here….”

Margot At The Wedding DVD Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“Margot at the Wedding is a movie by Noah Baumbach, whose film resume is unique to say the least. Baumbach was a co-writer on excellent movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, along with the talented Wes Anderson. Baumbach also wrote the 2005 movie The Squid and the Whale, which like The Life Aquatic was quirky and clever…..”

Semi-Pro Blu-Ray Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“Escape to a time and place where afros, disco, brown, and orange were all the rage. That’s right kids, the 70’s. Semi-Pro, for its short list of flaws, and occasional eye rolling push in the direction of “that’s not funny, it’s just silly”, this movie really delivers as authentic a period look at that roller-skating decade as any dramatic movie has in recent years…”

Strange Wilderness DVD Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“I was actually excited to see Steve Zahn, Allen Covert, Justin Long, Kevin Heffernan, and Jonah Hill work together. I figured going in that this movie had a lot of potential, and could be hysterical. I mean when you put in the Mac guy, McLovin’s buddy, the guy from Grandma’s Boy, Farva from Supertroopers, and the guy from Happy Texas together, you have a plethora of potential humor….”

NEW CONTENT (Digital Lounge) - Universal Pictures’ Blu-ray Strategy
QUOTE: “Of course, now the tables are turned and I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Universal came slinking to the Blu-ray Disc Association, which seemed to have occurred slightly before Toshiba ceded.
I should note as well, that Universals VP of strategic marketing Ken Graffeo was also the co-president of the HD-DVD consortium, which disbanded in March. This coincided with the departure of Graffeo from his post, in the same month.”

Classic Caballeros Collection DVD Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“This DVD is a collection of two separate features that were basically around 40 minutes in length on their own. When added together, they make a respectable 113 minutes. These two features were created in the early 1940’s, and were wildly popular in their time, but they do feel dated. They are very interesting to watch, if for no more than to see the progression that has occurred since then in terms of technology. It is hard not to compare the shorts to modern animated films, but it is neat to see the Disney characters in their prime.”

The Golden Compass Blu-Ray Disc Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“Life can be complicated and challenging. That’s what a grown up would say. I would say it too, on certain days. What can clear that moldy old thinking out of my aging mind? An adventure. I have forgotten the pure imagination that I used to have as a child. It kind of shriveled up somewhere under some boring clunky thoughts of bills, work, frustrations of everyday life. What would help me find it? An adventure I can believe in….and I found it….”

Cloverfield DVD Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“Cloverfield is fun. That is basically the best way to describe the way I feel about this film. The acting is not great, the story seems a little bit flimsy in spots, but it just seems to work. The handheld shtick seems a bit contrived in parts, but overall Cloverfield is what it is; a fun monster movie. Apparently I have missed those fun monster movies, because I had a great time watching this film…”

The Diving Bell & The Butterfly DVD Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“A man, Jean-Dominique Bauby, is stricken with Locked-In Syndrome. It’s a condition caused by a massive stroke that results in your entire body being paralyzed. It’s a real thing. Look it up. In this case it happens to the editor of French Elle magazine. He’s a mover and shaker, a bon vivant, a playboy of sorts. We also learn through the beautiful script and performances that he has recently left his children and girlfriend for a new woman. He’s a modern anti-hero, if it’s fair to apply movie terms to a real person that is….”
