Nighttime Tech Roundup – Articles and Reviews – 11/4/09

I’ve been busy pulling a few long days outside the house this week, and today was no exception.  Tomorrow is the last day of such activity, so we’ll be back on track after that.  For now – the news:

Review Blurb: “Today for review I’ve got a little NAS box from Qnap called the TS-219P. It supports two 3.5” or 2.5” SATA hard drives and is truly feature packed with the ability to become your main network storage device at home and while on the go. Not only is it for storage and backups, you can stream from it, use it as a mini-surveillance system, a web sever, or even a stand alone torrent machine.”

Article Blurb: “The holiday season is upon us… we just finished Halloween, where we managed to  sneak a few pieces of our kid’s Halloween booty.  Now it’s November,  so Thanksgiving is just around the corner, with turkey and the fixings to tempt us.  And Christmas will be here before you know it… with ham and all the Christmas cookies and candy that you just have to try.  So maybe you want a head start on your New Year’s resolution by getting fit or at the very least not gaining any weight this winter.”

Antec Two Hundred

Review Blurb: “PC gaming is unarguably making a rise in the gaming industry. It can be daunting, even for a veteran, with the endless slew of products and options available on the marker. At times, it can be hard to keep up with what you need and what you don’t, and there have been plenty out there willing to take advantage of that confusion. Luckily, there are companies out there who refuse to, who remain committed to giving the PC gamer exactly what they want and need. Antec is such a company, and they’ve sent us their most affordable gaming mid-tower yet, the Antec Two Hundred, to prove it.”

Energy Sistem xplosionn

Review Blurb: “Any music fan or anyone serious about their gaming will tell you that a decent set of headphones are an absolute necessity. Today I’m looking at the Xplosionn 5500, and at first glance it looks like a set of over the ear style headphones, with an added LCD for some strange reason.  Looking closer though you’ll find that it is in fact an mp3 player built into a set of headphones, so let’s find out more about this hybrid.”

Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 1GB Vapor-X Review

Link: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/25111-sapphire-radeon-hd-5870-vapor-x-1gb-review.html

Review Blurb:”If you have been living under a rock or have been taking a hiking trip through the Himalayas for the last few weeks, you would be forgiven if the ATI HD 5000-series release didn’t register on your radar. Otherwise, you better know about these cards because they are currently kicking ass and taking names across nearly every price point in the GPU marketplace. Unfortunately, much like that ultra-hot girl you remember from high school who was popular for all the right reasons, the HD 5870 and to a greater extent the HD 5850 seems to be all but unattainable for many people. This isn’t due to sky high prices but rather the fact that the cards have been very hard to find due to a combination of popularity and insufficient supply to meet demand.”

Managing Your Audio to Keep Neighbors Happy

Link: http://techgage.com/article/managing_your_audio_to_keep_neighbors_happy/

Article Blurb: “For the past few months, I’ve been working almost exclusively with multimedia PCs. In particular, the ASRock/Intel Atom-based computers that very nicely hook up to HDTV sets and new 1080p monitors. In several cases, these have been connected to high-end audio setups, incorporating some truly impressive gear… 100W channel, 5.1 is pretty typical of current setups.”

AMD Athlon II X4 620 CPU

Link: http://www.xtremecomputing.co.uk/review.php?id=493

Review Blurb: “For this review I will be looking at a new product from a company that needs no real introduction as anyone who has used a PC for any length of time has probably used one of their products. The company is AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) and I will be looking at one of their new X4 Athlon II CPU’s the X4 620 2600Mhz.”

Logitech 2009-2010 Product Showcase

Link: http://tech.tbreak.com/2009/11/logitech-2009-2010-product-showcase/

Article Blurb: “Logitech did their annual press event at the Monarch yesterday where Mr. Yousef Atwan, Regional Director Middle East & Africa for Logitech introduced the new Logitech products and technology. He explained how a lot of thought is put into every Logitech product and how Logitech is continuously looking at ways to innovate. There were two things that Logitech seemed to be focused at the moment.”

AMD Athlon II 620 X4

Link: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php?/cpu_mainboard/amd_athlon_ii_620_x4/1

Review Blurb: “For a long time AMD held the performance crown. Anyone with a passing interest in building their own computers, or having the fastest, ran AMD. The Barton processors were almost legendary. Then Intel came along with the 775 series of chips and AMD started lagging behind somewhat.”

AMD Athlon II X4 620 & Sapphire PI-AM3RS785G

Link: http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1716

Review Blurb: “Although they were released about a month ago, the new budget-councious quad-core processors from AMD are still fresh in the minds of many enthusiasts. The Athlon II X4 620 and 630 have made huge waves recently due to the fact that it is now possible to obtain a quad-core CPU for under $100. Pair this processor up with an AM3 motherboard running a 785G chipset and set of DDR3 RAM, and you will have your hands on a value-minded, mainstream performing rig.”

Corsair Flash Survivor 32GB USB Drive

Link: http://www.velocityreviews.com/reviews/Corsair_Flash_Survivor_32GB_USB_Drive/1/

Review Blurb: “The Corsair Survivor series of USB drives has been round for quite some time, with their trademark aluminium casing to protect the device from being crushed or washed (the usual mode of death for USB drives!). This particular review concentrates on the 32GB version, which should be plenty of storage space for your important backups. There is a larger 64GB size available should you need it, along with plenty of smaller sizes.”

Antec Mini Skeleton-90 Open Air Mini-ITX Case

Link: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/2992/antec_mini_skeleton_90_open_air_mini_itx_case/index.html

Review Blurb: “I have had many long hours inside of Antec cases, starting off with my 900. From what I have seen with Antec chassis’ in my short time here, is that air flow is key in their concepts. The 900, while a bit loud, had and still has some of the best chassis air flow money can buy. Even their open air chassis incorporated a large top fan and additional fans to keep components cool even without sides. This brings us to why I’m here today.”

AXUS FiT 500 RAID box

Link: http://www.techwarelabs.com/axus-fit-500/

Review Blurb: “RAID is very popular among those looking for the fastest possible, the most reliable possible, or both when in comes to their storage solution, but not everyone has the chassis space to pack 4+ drives for their RAID6, or just the two required for RAID0 and 1. That’s when you turn to a RAID box. RAID boxes allow for external RAID control for professional situations that need many drives for speed or redundancy, or both. They come in many sizes and many budget ranges, and are perfect for those that don’t want their main drive to be on RAID. Today, we have the AXUS FiT 500E RAID subsystem. This mid-sized enclosure offers 5 drive bays and easy RAID configuration through it’s rotary switch and LCD screen. We’ll play with the AXUS FiT 500 after the break, but first, here is some information about AXUS and the FiT 500.”

Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 Vapor-X Video Card

Link: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1120/1/

Review Blurb: “Today we are taking a look at our second retail ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card, as we looked at the ASUS EAH5870 Voltage Tweak a few weeks ago. The card that we have for you today is the Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 Vapor-X which is, to our knowledge, the first ATI Radeon HD 5870 series graphics card to deviate from the reference design when it comes to the GPU cooler, and on top of that it comes overclocked right out of the box.”

Review Blurb: “Today I am going to check out one of the hottest looking PS3/PC controllers ever to hit the market called the Ferrari Wireless Gamepad 430 Scuderia Limited Edition. The gamepad is an officially licensed Ferrari product and has programmable buttons. If you are looking for a new game controller that can work for your PC and your PS3 read on for all of the details.”

Razer Naga MMO Laser Gaming Mouse

Link: http://www.hardwarezone.com/news/view.php?cid=2&id=14989

Review Blurb: “The Naga’s main selling point is the huge, twelve button grid, located where other mice usually just have back/forward buttons. To accommodate the grid, the mouse is slightly fatter on the left side, resulting in a sloping grip that actually provides a really comfortable, ergonomic feel. It does, however, mean that the Naga is for right-handers only.”

Canon PowerShot S90 Review

Link: http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/review/6749/canon-powershot-s90-review

Review Blurb: “Canon recently introduced the PowerShot G11 ($499) and the S90 ($429), two high-end compact digicams generating huge amounts of online buzz. Both have similar, relatively-large 10-megapixel CCDs, but are targeted to very different photographers. Rather than focusing on the more expensive G11, a variation of the previously reviewed G10, we opted for the S90, a camera with several unique features you simply won’t find among the 250-plus digicams currently available (although fans of Panasonic’s LX3 might find some strong similarities). Let’s see if that buzz is real, or Internet hype…”
