Yikes – today I slept in.  By that, I mean I didn’t get up until 7:45am.  Now I feel all disoriented and off schedule.

Today’s tech reviews are a bunch of hardware pieces and a few other things.  Have a good day, everyone.

Applesac 13” MacBook Sleeve by Colcasac

Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/applesac-13-macbook-sleeve-by-colcasac/

Review Blurb: “Fortunately for me, I received a new laptop sleeve from Colcasac called the Applesac, designed specifically for my 13” MacBook. This sleeve is very model specific, so when I say 13” MacBook I mean 13” MacBook. You’ll be hard pressed to get anything else in this thing with such a precise fit. But for those who use said laptop as their machine of choice, read on for info about a pretty slick product.”

How Stuff Works – Cell Phone Towers

Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/information/how-stuff-works-cell-phone-towers/

Article Blurb: “There is an object near you right now that is extremely technical. Maybe it’s in your pocket, or in a holster on your belt. Perhaps sitting on your desk, or in your purse. It could even be in your hand, showing you these words right now. It’s lurking with you everywhere you go, and the invisible signals that make it work are pummeling your body from every direction millions of times per day. It is a marvel of human invention, and has used its power to change the daily lives of modern people. It is (bum bum BUM!) a cell phone”

Cooler Master Storm Sentinel Advance & CS-M FPS Tactics Pad

Link: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/2942/cooler_master_storm_sentinel_advance_cs_m_fps_tactics_pad/index.html

Review Blurb: “I know my first mouse was a simple two-button, beige, loud clicking monster from days long ago. As time progressed from roller-balls to optical mice, things vastly improved, not only for movement, but no longer was the need to constantly remove hair from the roller ball. While optical sensing was a huge leap in mouse technology, Lasers sure stole the show. Along with all the internal technological advances, the exteriors have also come a long way from the square, beige mouse I had for my Commodore 64.”

Chillblast Fusion Switchblade

Link: http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/reviews/other-products/chillblast-fusion-switchblade/

Review Blurb: “While the majority of readers of sites like this will be builders of their own PCs, there are some of you that will always consider purchasing a pre-built one. The reasons for doing so are multitudinous. Not only do you get a professionally built unit, but you get a nice fat warranty and in the case of many, a guaranteed functioning overclock without the need for all that tweaking and testing.”

ASUS F50Sv

Link: http://www.insidehw.com/Reviews/Notebooks/ASUS-F50Sv.html

Review Blurb: “Today’s insatiable notebook market can always make room for another new model, and ASUS is producing new models almost on weekly bases. This time we present you model from ASUS Versatile Performance series (or, for rest of us something in between gaming and multimedia): F50Sv. Interesting and modern design, quality build and very decent performances are main characteristic or this model.”

Evercool Transformer 4 CPU Cooler

Link: http://www.bcchardware.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7687&Itemid=40

Review Blurb: “The Evercool Transformer 4 is a large tower heatpipe cooler which is similar to some others that we’ve taken a look at in the past, however the Transformer 4 comes with 2 120mm fans which are designed to achieve a balance of high performance cooling while remaining nice and quiet. “

Zalman GS1000 Plus Tower Case

Link: http://www.bcchardware.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7664&Itemid=40

Review Blurb: “It’s been a little over a year since we looked at a case from Zalman.  In fact, the last case we looked at was the precursor to the case we have on the bench today – the GS1000 Plus.  Last August we looked at the GS1000 case and found the overall design and layout to be quite good, but it did lack in a few areas.  Today we are looking at the new and hopefully improved GS1000 Plus case.  This case supports up to E-ATX motherboards, has nice aluminum side panels and can support some of the longest PCIe graphics cards available.  It has pretty good ventilation, a bottom mounted PSU and supports six Hard Drives – 3 of which are hot-swap SATA.  This case is also tool-less and you’ll only need a screwdriver to strap your PSU onto the PSU bracket and install your motherboard.  Once that is done, basic hardware swapping is easy as cake (pie is harder than you’d think).”

GIGABYTE Radeon HD 5870 Graphics Card in CrossFire X

Link: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/2943/gigabyte_radeon_hd_5870_graphics_card_in_crossfire_x/index.html

Review Blurb: “As our third retail HD 5870 rolled into the labs it was time to check out CrossFire X. Some may wonder what CrossFire X is. Well, it’s like CrossFire, but with an X. On a serious note, though, in a single GPU setup it means we’re going to be dealing with three cards today. If you’re packing a dual GPU setup it tends to mean you’re dealing with four GPUs which is something we intend to attack when the HD 5870 X2 shows up on our door step.”

Smartphone App Stores Compared

Link: http://news.digitaltrends.com/feature/143/smartphone-app-stores-compared

Article Blurb: “If a building is only as good as its foundation, then a smartphone is only as good as its app store. Even as manufacturers continue to stack their handsets with YouTube support, instant messaging, and other essentials right out of the box, the features just don’t add up to the amount of capability a phone can take on in the hands of the right developers: You name it, a good smartphone can do it.”

PopCap Games, the leading developer and publisher of casual games, today announced that Zuma’s Revenge!(TM) — Adventure, a single mode version of the recently-launched sequel to the ball-blasting classic, is now available on leading game portals with a suggested retail price of US$9.95. The highly anticipated sequel to the original hit game that has sold 17 million copies worldwide, Zuma’s Revenge! — Adventure is available for the PC via Web download from MSN Games, Yahoo Games, RealArcade, GameHouse, iWin.com, STEAM, AOL, and pogo.com. The single mode edition includes all the eye-popping imagery, features and fast-paced fun of the main "Adventure" mode from Zuma’s Revenge! but does not include the premium version’s other modes.

"Adventure mode is the core of Zuma’s Revenge!, and consumers on tight gaming budgets will have hours of fun with this infinitely replayable, never-the-same-game-twice edition at half the cost of the premium version," said Dennis Ryan, EVP of Global Business Development. "More avid gamers may prefer the advanced challenges and additional modes in the premium version of Zuma’s Revenge! but this Adventure mode edition will enable any and all customers to enjoy this tremendous sequel to one of the all-time classics."

In Zuma the player takes the role of a fearless ball-shooting frog, exploring ancient temples and ruins. By firing colored spheres into an advancing chain of balls to make matches of three or more, the frog blasts his way through a series of arcade challenges. The sequel brings the player to an all-new setting, the Polynesian paradise ruled by Zhaka Mu, and ups the ante with nearly triple the screen resolution of the original game, cool 3-D particle effects, and support for widescreen monitors. Further, Zuma’s Revenge!(TM) — Adventure takes the relatively basic point-and-click input of the original Zuma up several notches, incorporating horizontal and vertical "sliding" as well as the ability to hop from one lily pad to another to achieve greater flexibility and hit hard-to-reach areas of the screen. All-new tiki boss enemies provide a climactic ending to each major stage of the game and introduce various new forms of attack and defense that must be used to succeed in the game.

Features in Zuma's Revenge! -- Adventure include:
  -- More than 60 all-new levels
-- Six mini-game Boss Battles that introduce explosive new attacks and
      wily defenses
-- Three all-new power-up effects: Lightning, Laser, and Tri-Shot (plus
all the power-ups from the original Zuma)
-- New methods of movement like lily-pad hopping, slide-aiming, and more

-- Amazing high definition (1920 x 1200) graphics and dazzling effects
that bring Zuma into the modern world of gaming

Cocoon Innovations CLB551 Laptop Case

Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/cocoon-innovations-clb551-laptop-case/

Review Blurb: “About a week ago I took a look at a netbook case from Cocoon Innovations that featured their unique GridIT storage system. I found the case to be top notch, in fact I’ve continued to use it as a home for my netbook. Today for review review I’ve got another case from Cocoon, but this one is for laptops up to 15.4” in size. It also features their GridIt system, along with several pockets and lots of room for your stuff. I was truly surprised by just how much stuff I could get in this case and still have room left over. Like the netbook case, this one is also nicely made and should offer decent protection for your laptop while providing room enough for all of your stuff.”

HDD vs SSD on a Netbook – Acer Aspire One D250

Link: http://igadgetlife.com/2009/09/29/hdd-vs-ssd-on-a-netbook-%E2%80%93-acer-aspire-one-d250/

Review Blurb: “My Acer Aspire One D250 came with a standard mechanical hard drive, and recently I acquired another SSD drive so I figured why not swap the HDD out for the SSD as that seems the popular way to go these days. Now I knew the read and write speeds of the SSD would be much faster than the lowly 5400RPM hard drive, but I was curious as to how much of an actual affect it had on the system as a whole though.”

HIS Radeon HD 5870 1GB Video Card

Link: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/2940/his_radeon_hd_5870_1gb_video_card/index.html

Review Blurb: “When it comes to performance, with the cards following the same clock speeds there isn’t really going to be much of a change when it comes to the numbers. Apart from a little bit of fluctuation, there’s not going to be a whole lot of difference.”

CRU DataPort SecureDock

Link: http://www.hi-techreviews.com/index.php/review-links-mainmenu-80/9752-cru-dataport-securedock

Review Blurb: “In this day and age it is becoming more and more common to hear of people having their identification stolen and the computer is one of the prime harvesting grounds for this type of thief. In an effort to prevent this from happening you have a number of options at hand, one is you can refuse to use your computer for anything other than reading the daily joke on the Internet. The second option is one that makes far more sense and that is to find a means by which you can store your data in such a way as to make it nearly impossible to steal your information. In other words some form of hardened storage. Which brings us to the device we are reviewing today, the CRU DataPort SecureDock. This device not only allows you to separate your data from your computers hard drive, but it also allows the data to be encrypted making it far hard to access and read.”

Gigabyte P55-UD5

Link: http://techgage.com/article/gigabyte_p55-ud5/

Review Blurb: “When Intel launches a brand-new CPU architecture to the market, (in the most recent case, Lynnfield), vendors of all types waste no time in following-up with their own product to compliment it. In the case of motherboards, companies such as ASUS and Gigabyte really shine, as both offer not just one or two each, but a combined 20+.”

OCZ Technology 64GB Agility Series SATA II Solid State Drive

Link: http://www.ccereviews.com/reviews/ocz-technology-64gb-agility-series-sata-ii-solid-state-drive/

Review Blurb: “Some would say I’ve been blessed with the opportunity of owning so many solid state drives. With the weak and uncertain economy very few people are willing to shell out a few hundred bucks for a small hard drive. Those who can afford the drives are now faced with the question of who to buy from. So many companies offer SSDs claiming to have the best performance out there. So who can you trust?”

Blade DDR3-1600 6-6-6 6GB Triple Channel Memory Kit

Link: http://www.ocia.net/reviews/oczblade1600/page1.shtml

Review Blurb: “Today I will be looking at one of OCZ’s answers to triple channel, the OCZ Blade DDR3-1600 6GB kit. With timings of 6-6-6-24, we should definitely see some low-latency goodness, and its heavy finned heat spreaders should keep the modules cool. Will the Blade DDR3-1600 satisfy? Read on to see.”

XCM Xbox 360 Diamond Clear Case and Controller Set

Link: http://www.bigbruin.com/content/xcmcase_1

Review Blurb: “Today we venture off the beaten path of our normal reviews and get up close and personal with the XCM Xbox 360 Diamond clear case and controller set. With the modifications done to the Xbox Live service, the addition of Netflix to their line up, and the massive amount of video games available, the Xbox 360 is more popular then ever. The XCM case mod will help distinguish your Xbox 360 from all of the units out there sporting one of the three basic looks; standard white, Halo 3 green, and the Elite black. Is a mod like this too much for the average gamer to take on? Well it is time to find out.”

Starbucks recently announced two iPhone apps.  The first, a relatively dull app that merely shows you the locations of nearby Starbucks facilities, tells you their hours and tells you their amenities, is called myStarbucks.  The second app, Starbucks Card Mobile, is a little more exciting.

iPhone users will be able to add a balance to their account.  Upon receiving their coffee beverage, they will simply scan a code and the amount will be debited from their available balance.  That’s it.

Judging from the picture, it looks like Starbucks Code Mobile will be utilizing QR Codes.  Popular overseas in Japan, QR codes are something most Americans still have no idea exists.  It’ll be interesting to see how one of America’s obsessions utilizes the QR.

A QR code can be anything from a link to a website, a stanza of a poem, or, coffee debit information.  It gets scrambled up and becomes much like what you see to the left.  A reader will analyze the code like any other bar code and turn it into usable data.

Starbucks Card Mobile is currently active in Seattle, Cupertino and Mountain View – the fancy places with all the big tech companies.

EASEUS Todo Backup 1.0

Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/easeus-todo-backup-1-0/

Review Blurb: “These days, everyone knows you should back up your data on a regular basis. Our hard drives are becoming so big and the amount of data on them is nearly incomprehensible. To that end, when trouble occurs or our drives fail, it is crucial that we have a backup on hand. Otherwise, the hope of manually replacing everything on your computer is nearly impossible.”

Kingston HyperX Fan

Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/kingston-hyperx-fan/

Review Blurb: “Kingston makers of the HyperX line of performance RAM modules recently released their memory cooler dubbed the HyperX Fan. This fan can be bought separately or comes bundled with Kingston’s 6 GB 2000MHz and 1800MHz triple channel memory kits with the T1 heat spreader is for Intel Core i7 systems. XMI X-mini II Mini Speaker

Link: http://www.dragonsteelmods.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15033&Itemid=1

Review Blurb: “Today I’ve got a unique little product for review called the XMI X-Mini II Mini Speaker, and it’s exactly what it sounds like, a mini speaker. Sure there are many of these types of products out there and I’ve tried a few of them myself, but this one is the best of the bunch really. It’s small, portable and has excellent sound. One of the best features I think is that it uses a built-in rechargeable high capacity battery that gives you about 11 hours play time and charges from any USB port.”

Atomic Pico Bluetooth Dongle

Link: http://igadgetlife.com/2009/09/27/atomic-pico-bluetooth-dongle/

Review Blurb: “Bluetooth is prevalent in lots of our devices, but it has yet to become a standard in our PCs, laptops and netbooks, and I’m not sure why exactly. You’d think with all of those BT devices out there more manufacturers would start to make Bluetooth a standard feature. I’ve got the Acer Aspire One D250 and it does not come standard with Bluetooth, you’ve got to purchase a higher priced model to get it or purchase an internal card after the fact.”

14 Mac Safari Plugins That Won’t Cost You a Cent

Link: http://igadgetlife.com/2009/09/26/14-mac-safari-plugins-that-wont-cost-you-a-cent/

Article Blurb: “Some Mac users love Safari. Others see it as the bane of internet browsers. Some use it out of respect for the Apple brand – it’s what comes on the machine, so it is pure Mac. Some use it because they appreciate its simplicity. Some hate it for the same reasons; with its relative lack of features, they prefer choices like Chrome or Firefox that offer more functionality.”

Cooler Master Storm Sentinel Advance Mouse

Review Blurb: “Today Cooler Master adds another gamer oriented product to the CM Storm line with the Sentinel Advanced gaming mouse. The gaming mice market is certainly a competitive one and gamers can be very picky about their devices. From adjustable DPI (up to a crazy 5600) and profile management the Sentinel Advance may be just the perfect mouse for any gamer.”

Review Blurb: “Today we’re looking at a pretty special GTX 260 from GIGABYTE. Carrying with it the new Super Overclock naming scheme, we hope that there’s something pretty exciting about the card in store. While GIGABYTE managed to talk the card up a bit to me, most companies talk up their product so it remains to be seen how well it really goes.”

Ulti-Mat Breathe F-X3 Oversized Cloth Mousepad

Link: http://www.ocmodshop.com/ocmodshop.aspx?a=1682

Review Blurb: “Nearly a decade ago, Tony Montana and computer mice had one thing in common: they were judged by the quality of their balls.  Thicker, heavier balls were better at tracking on your desk, but most people had to use cloth mousepads to get the most grip out of their mice.”

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition

Link: http://www.insidehw.com/Reviews/CPU/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-965-Black-Edition.html

Review Blurb: “This time AMD decided to show us limits if its 45nm manufacturing process by presenting Phenom II X4 965 CPU. This model has highest ever (default) frequency of all CPUs that were manufactured in AMD factories. It is based on highly successful Deneb core with 6MB of L3 cache and support for DDR2 and DDR3 memory standard. Compared to previously tested AMD Phenom II X4 955 model there aren’t too many differences, so you could say that this new CPU is identical to the old one, except few differences in voltage specifications.”

Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme CPU Cooler

Link: http://www.ocia.net/reviews/tuniq120extreme/page1.shtml

Review Blurb: “Being an avid overclocker means hundreds of hours and many different methods of cooling will be implemented in the quest for a cooler processor. This involves experiments in thermal interface materials, application of said pastes, lapping, airflow, and most importantly coolers. CPU coolers come in many shapes and sizes, and more often than not, those shapes and sizes have a direct bearing on the cooler’s ability to draw away and dissipate the heat created by energy lost in your processor. Today we get to test the newest offering for Tuniq: the Tower 120 Extreme. The Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme is a rehash of the Tuniq flagship cooler, the Tower 120. There are many similarities, including size, but also many design changes that may prove to give the Extreme version the cooling performance edge.”

OCZ Z Series 850W

Link: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=167

Review Blurb: “I’ll be honest with you guys. I was going to go all Prospector Pete on you for my first 80 Plus Gold review. I was going to pretend like I was standing in the middle of a mountain valley wearing old coveralls sporting a shovel, several days’ worth of whiskers, missing several teeth, with a lot of frizzy hair. But then I realized something – it’s not that effective if you look like that all the time.”
