EFi- X USB V1 Reviewed
Many hackers and geeks became quite excited at the prospect of getting of running the OS X operating system on a standard PC when Steve Jobs introduced the first Intel based Mac machines back in 2005. It did not take long for several Apple enthusiast communities to figure out how to get OS X onto standard PC hardware. Unfortunately, this process is not as straightforward as inserting OS X Tiger or Leopard into the PC’s disc drive and running the installer. There are certain patches that need to be implemented to get the OS X kernel to operate on an x86 machine. In addition, only certain motherboards and graphics cards will work with these setups.
Apple’s decision to use EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) instead of the legacy BIOS currently used on x86 Motherboards is one of the main reasons for the difficulty in installing and running OS X on standard x86 architecture. The EFI is an interface that allows communication between the operation system and platform’s firmware. Some advantages of EFI over the legacy BIOS can be seen with Disk Support and Boot Management.
Getting a stock x86 machine to be recognized as running EFI is the Holy Grail of running OS X on a standard PC. If this could be accomplished, then a purchased authentic copy of OS X can be installed on a PC without any need for hacks or patches. Until recently, the only way to get the Mac experience on a standard PC was to hunt down patches to use with a purchased OS X install disc or a patched OS X version. Finding these usually meant going to torrent sites or other less savory parts of the net.
That is until now; a company called Art Studios Entertainment has created a Boot Processing Unit (BPU) called the EFi-X USB V1. This device attaches onto an internal USB header on the PC’s motherboard.

Title: Thecus N4100PRO Network Attached Storage System @ APH Networks
* Description: Happy, happy new year! It seems that 2008 has gone by so fast,
when I was entering the information of this article earlier today, I simply
typed “2008″ without much attention. Note to self: It’s 2009. Now that
everything seems to have gotten back to normal — back to work, or back to
school, or maybe even both — it’s time for me to get started on writing
reviews again haha. In this evaluation article, we will take a look at
Thecus’ N4100PRO network attached storage system. I’ve been a big fan of such
systems built into my home network since I deployed my first one back in
2006. Now that I am on my third ever owned NAS machine, my love has not died
off at all — in fact, I’ve always wondered how I lived without it. With
enhanced data flow within my local area network, simplified backup procedure,
out of sight experience, and the convenience of having it always available –
and best of all, ease of use — there’s no reason for me not to be such a big
fan of such devices. Interestingly, today’s network attached storage systems
are no longer the same as yesteryear’s. It’s hard to call them simply
“network attached storage” anymore. Many features built-in print servers,
Bittorrent clients, media server capabilities, incredible performance over
Gigabit networks, and the list goes on and on. In light of that, let’s see
what the Thecus N4100PRO can offer us today: Both in areas of basic file
performance; extending to availability of built-in features.

Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=13386
Summary: “In late 2005 we looked at the ATP ToughDrive 1GB flash drive and in 2006 looked at ATP’s ProMax 150x CF card, but since then we haven’t heard much from this company. However, they have recently released two new products, which we are looking at today. There is the ATP 8GB EarthDrive, which is advertised as the world’s first recyclable USB drive, and secondly there is the ATP 8GB ToughDrive. The EarthDrive is made of a biodegradable material that is derived from corn.”

NEW CONTENT (Cases, Cooling and Power Supplies) – Xigmatek Thor’s Hammer S126384 Exclusive Preview
QUOTE: “Xigmatek managed to pull off the ultimate hat trick in 2008. The company made coolers that were cheaper, lighter, quieter and performed just as well as the very best CPU coolers manufactured in 2008. The key to Xigmatek’s success has to do with their HDT (Heatpipe Direct Touch) patent and what it does to seemingly ordinary coolers.
It is now 2009 and Xigmatek is ready to break into a new market. The company will still offer their amazing sub 40 Dollar USD coolers that perform with the best 80 Dollar products from other manufacturers, but they are now ready to bring their own ultra premium coolers to the market.”

The OCZ “Fatal1ty” Series 700W power supply should be more than enough most gamers, but I have a feeling that a lot of the hardcore, high-end gaming enthusiasts might give this one a miss. Still, I believe with OCZ’s technical expertise in power supplies the “Fatal1ty” Series 700W could do alright. We’ll be putting this power supply through our 240W “Peltier Test” and see how well it will perform under heavy load.

The new Gigabyte iSolo 230 chassis is available in black, metallic and in silver,
whereby we reviewed the black version in this test report.
Gigabyte set with the iSolo 230 a high value on the design, but also on a
nice finish and a very good air flow.
Above all, several small features like the blue illuminated power button
and the preparation for a water cooler enhance the result.

NEW CONTENT (Cases, Cooling and Power Supplies) – Exclusive look at Cooler Master’s V10 Heatsink
QUOTE: “Cooler Master is making some bold products for 2009. It started off with the Black Label that we reviewed just yesterday and is now spreading to the company’s CPU cooler products. If you thought the V8 was extreme, just wait till you see the V10. In all fairness the V10 should really be called the W16, or at least the V12; the gap between the V8 and V10 is very far apart. Think Mustang compared to a supped up Venom Viper.
The new V10 will not be released until February and Cooler Master is keeping a tight grip on performance numbers, allowing everyone to get a chance to get samples for the launch. But since we asked nicely, we are able to bring you this exclusive pictorial a full month ahead of time. Let’s have a look!”

InsideHW.com has reviewed Cooler Master HAF 932 case. Here is a quote from this review:
“HAF 932 is the first model from newest Cooler Master HAF chassis series. HAF (High Air Flow) series is designed to provide maximal airflow. When “maximal airflow†is mentioned, probably the first association is noise, but nowadays this isn’t the case because R&D team from Cooler Master is actually listening to user critiques. As result of this “collaboration†between Cooler Master and users we can present you Cooler Master HAF 932. If you wonder how Cooler Master achieved big airflow with low noise levels, answer is simple: fans with large radius and low RPM. Of course Cooler Master didn’t re-invent hot water but this is not the only reason that makes this case unique and special…â€

Here is a snippet:
“From all the stuff I and Cássio saw during CES 2009 probably the craziest one was a series of retro-looking phone handsets for your cell phone, from a company called YUBZ (pronounced “why you busy”). They are available in two versions: wired or wireless, using Bluetooth technology. Now imagine you walking down the street, your phone ringing and you picking up a red phone receiver like the “hot line” between Batman and Commissioner Gordon on the 1960’s TV show. Definitely a terrific ice-breaker, especially when you go partying.”

Winston: Tell us more about yourself, a little bit of history about Lian-Li as a company and the products that they sell.
Peter: Hi Winston, I’d like to thank you kindly for this opportunity. My name is Peter du Preez, I have been in the tech industry for roughly the last 16 years, with the last four years being devoted to companies from within Taiwan. I am currently an Account Manager for GlobalPR, and I handle all the English media public relations for Lian Li on their behalf. The company I work for (GlobalPR www.globalPR.com.tw ) is a Public Relations Consultancy in Taiwan for mainly Tech related companies. We help local manufacturers connect with tech media globally, or visa versa.
Lian Li is one of our prized customers who has built a brand through years of continually redefining the boundaries in making aluminium chassis; in fact they have been stamping and bending aluminium for the last 20 years. That makes them in my opinion the oldest and most respected chassis manufacturer in Taiwan. The fact that they don’t outsource production to China, or Vietnam or any of the other cheap labour countries enforces the fact that they have very high quality standards. As someone who personally owns a Lian Li chassis I have to say you get what you pay for. It’s expensive to some, but like a luxury motorcar, it has everything I will ever need in a case as well as exquisitely refined good looks.

TITLE: Antec P1000 Computer Case Prototype @ Benchmark Reviews
DESCRIPTION: Antec has been the top choice for system builders and hardware enthusiasts for almost a decade now, which is quite surprising when you consider the competition. But the good old days of beige box computer cases with plenty of fans lining the inside are long gone. While visiting with Mr. Han Liu, Antec’s product development director present at the 2009 International CES, Benchmark Reviews discussed the Antec P1000 gaming chassis prototype.

Today NVIDIA is launching yet another high-end 3D graphics offering, an optimized version of their top shelf GeForce GTX 280 single GPU card, dubbed the GeForce GTX 285. This new GeForce is a die-shrunk version of the legacy GTX 280 with lower power consumption characteristics that don’t require an 8-pin PCI Express connector, rather just a pair of more standard 6-pin plugs.
Although the GeForce GTX 285 we’ll be showing you here hasn’t exactly been a well kept secret, its final specifications and performance have been. As its name implies, the GeForce GTX 285 is a step up from the GTX 280. Just how large of a step up remains to be seen, however. We’ll take you through a thorough evaluation and deep dive look at NVIDIA’s new flagship GPU, in the pages ahead…

NEW CONTENT (Visual) – Inno3D GeForce GTX 285 Overclock Graphics Card
QUOTE: “Having just had a look at the GTX 285 from GIGABYTE which strictly follows the reference design, it’s nice to see a company at launch offer a card that doesn’t carry the stock clocks. While there is nothing wrong with reference clocks and the speeds the GTX 285 puts out in its stock form, there’s no denying that we want more power if we can get it.
Inno3D tend to send us some special cards, be it a good overclock or a nice new heatsink that helps keep the card nice and cool. While it doesn’t come as any surprise that this Inno3D card carries with it the reference heatsink, it’s good to know it carries their overclock trait.”

The funny thing about how expensive technology is, is that as soon as you buy something that costs $300, it?s automatically obsolete and is worth roughly 1/3 of the original price. Actually, it was pretty much obsolete the moment you bought it. The world of the PC DIYer is a fantastic world, but the price bracket sucks the biggest set of hairy boys possible. That?s why when I had to replace my motherboard on my tight budget, I went for one that wouldn?t break the bank. Because let?s face it. There are going to be a couple dozen introduced next week that will render your new i7 compatible board as ancient technology. I think I?ll stick with my Athlon Dual Core until the price range comes down.
The motherboard I chose to replace the junker with the fried PCI-E slot is the GeForce 6100PM-M2. Yeah, it has an Nvidia chipset. And while Nvidia may not make the best chipset on earth, they make one of the cheapest when you are on a budget. And since it supports my Athlon 64 X2, along with 16GB of DDR2 RAM, I am more than happy to give it a shot

“Survival horror is about experiencing a terrifying and deeply personal fiction. Dead Space delivers the chilling, claustrophobic feeling of being isolated in a dark environment, while being stalked by horrific enemies. Very similar in atmosphere to Resident Evil, Dead Space is a scary game that should be devoured by hardcore horror fans. If you’ve never understood the appeal of scary games – or movies, for that matter – Dead Space won’t change your opinion. If you dig sci-fi and horror, you’ll be blown away by the cinematic visuals and outstanding gameplay. We can’t say the storyline is overly original (lost-on-a-desolate-spaceship blah, blah, blah…), and the objectives get a bit repetitive (constant toing and froing), but nonetheless it’s strong enough to create a compelling gaming experience that every Resident Evil fan should try. We are already eagerly awaiting Dead Space 2.â€

NEW CONTENT (Visual) – GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 285 Graphics Card
QUOTE: “While we would all no doubt love to own the latest top of the line dual GPU bad boy, for many it’s simply not a purchase that can be swallowed by their partner, bank account or even themselves. The GTX 285, on the other hand, should offer excellent performance while not hitting the bank account as hard. The key words there, though, is “as hard”, because don’t think for a second that the GTX 285 is going to be cheap.
The card we’re looking at today comes from GIGABYTE, so with everything said and done let’s have a quick look at the package before having a closer look at the card and its specifications. From there we will check out the performance and see how it compares to the older cards like the GTX 280 which is still a very capable card along with the ex performance crown holder, the HD 4870 X2. Let’s stop blabbering and get a move on to the package.”

Asus being one of Nvidia’s closest partners will always get to release their Geforce GTX 285 graphic cards first … before anyone else. But Asus don’t just release standard stock cards and re-badge them. They take the extra effort to pre-overclock their GPUs to give their GTX 285 that extra boost in performance … hence the name TOP (Top Overclcoking Performance). Title: Thermaltake Spedo Advance Package @ APH Networks
* Description: Things have changed quite a lot over one year. With the dawn
of a new year, it will bring about a refreshed array of new products that the
world will soon see. In the past year, we have witnessed the introduction of
new products that were faster and more efficient than ever before. Ranging
from the initial launch of new unibody Apple MacBooks, to the exciting beta
version of Windows 7, everything on the face of the earth seems to be getting
bigger and faster (We’re not saying it’s a good thing or bad thing — you
decide). There’s $1000 12-inch “netbooks”, 17 inch laptops with SLI graphics
that gets half an hour of battery life, but then there’s also laptops on the
latest Intel mobile platform that provides switchable graphics — you get the
idea. The only thing that is almost universally agreeable to have gotten
worse this year is the economy, with hope that the dawn of a new year will
bring back some much needed renewal of various markets. Either way, consumers
are starting to spend their money more wisely these days, but those who have
cash on their hands are definitely benefiting from reduced-price items. Be it
buying cars or purchasing new computer components, it’s always important to
consider the merits and the affordability of a product before buying such. On
a lighter note, since we mentioned cars already — how about a ’sports car
inspired’ full tower case? Today, we will be taking a look at the Thermaltake
Spedo Advance Package chassis. This case is designed not only to be like a
fast car, but also contains elements of the looks of one. But how does it
actually stack up in real life? We will answer this very question in our
review today.

NEW CONTENT (Cases, Cooling and Power Supplies) – Cooler Master Black Label – Limited Edition Cosmos Chassis
QUOTE: “1 in 500; take a look at it for a moment. Few concepts are able to draw such an emotional response like exclusivity. In our mass produced, stamped steel world, many go to extremes to show their individualism with custom cars, boats, bikes and I am pretty sure that on more than one occasion a few unique mods have made their way to the TweakTown News section as well. There is a fine line between truly unique and unique to you. Not to belittle those that put their blood, sweat and tears into modding mass produced products, but owning a true limited edition from the factory can have a huge impact on the ego.
The Cooler Master Black Label is not the company’s first product or group of products to come in limited numbers. Many of the CSX cases were produced in batches as small as 25 units and each was labeled with an identification number such as Number 15 of 25. The Cooler Master Medusa that currently houses my personal gaming system is 1 of 300. Still, the Medusa is just one of many from the CSX line, so the feeling of having a real limited product is somewhat diluted. The Black Label, at least for now does not share this stigma and currently there is only one product in what may become a Black Label product line. But for now at least, the feeling of owning one puts me on top of the world.”

NEW CONTENT (Guides) – Windows 7 and Vista (and XP) Simple Multi-Boot Guide
QUOTE: “In this quick and simple guide today, we are going to show you how to multi-boot Windows 7, Windows Vista AND Windows XP. Actually, the method we use will probably work for booting other operating systems as well, such as Linux Ubuntu and others. This guide will assume that you have Windows Vista SP1 (yes – the service pack must be installed, too!) already installed and you are prepared to upgrade that install to Windows 7 (W7) BETA, as per the requirement from Microsoft.
It’s going to mean installing Vista again once W7 has been upgraded, but this is the safest, quickest and easiest method we have found. We do know there are many software applications out there that allow you to setup dual booting, but this method doesn’t require any additional software at all and just works!”
