Alpha 400 MIPS 400MHz 128MB 1GB 7″ Linux Ultralite Notebook Reviewed @ TestFreaks.com

December 31st, 2008 by Kristofer

Title: Alpha 400 MIPS 400MHz 128MB 1GB 7″ Linux Ultralite Notebook Reviewed @ TestFreaks.com

Review Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/alpha-400-mips-400mhz-128mb-1gb-7-linux-ultralite-note/

Review Snipit:
“Our friends at Geeks.com have sent us one of their laptop computers for review, though this one might be considered ultralite or even a netbook and by now I’m sure you’ve heard a bit about it. It’s called the Alpha 400 MIPS 400MHz 128MB 1GB 7″ Linux Ultralite Notebook and as you can see by the 400Mhz in the name, it’s not very powerful, so don’t expect to be gaming on it, but I’ve spent three weeks with it now and it’s really not that bad, especially if you consider the price. The Alpha 400 is nice little netbook that is actually fun to play with for basic surfing the internet and it can do productive things as well like word processing, charts, graphs, daily planning and even chatting and watching movies or listening to music. “

Patriot 128GB Warp SSD Drive PE128GS25SSDR @ TestFreaks.com

Title: Patriot 128GB Warp SSD Drive PE128GS25SSDR @ TestFreaks.com

Review Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/patriot-128gb-warp-ssd-drive-pe128gs25ssdr/

Review Snipit:
” Today for review I’ve got my first SSD or Solid State Drive, I think by now you should know exactly what an SSD is, so their’s no need to go into that explanation. The SSD I have for review today is from our friends at Patriot Memory, it’s their new Warp Drive and it has a capacity of 128gb so it’s rather large in terms of SSD drives. Since it’s my first type of drive like this I don’t have anything to compare it to, so I’m comparing it to some standard HDDs that I’ve got on hand, two 2.5″ drives and two 3.5″ drives to see how it stacks up against them.”

New for December 30th 2008 - two more days till years end!

December 30th, 2008 by Kristofer

Well the year is almost over, does it really matter? Not really, it’s just another day…

——————————————————————–

What we should all appreciate about Gears 2 is that the devs did not make it Gears 1 with more stuff. Instead of this game having five berserkers, 20 seeders, and a boss that was just Raam 2.0, the people at Epic said “Gears 1 was Gears 1, Gears 2 will be different.”

Sure, it’s mostly the same game with the cover fighting, but the pacing of this game is 20 times faster than the last. You’ll be deep underground one moment, in a worm, in a haunted mansion-like place, up a snowy mountain, and then fighting a water monster back underground in not a lot of time. There is so much variety that some of it seems tossed in, not very hard, and more than a bit unnecessary, but it does help the game fly along.

Title: AMD Releases Open-Source R600/700 3D Code @ Phoronix
Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=13322
Summary: “Since earlier this year we have been waiting for AMD to release documentation and/or code on the ATI R600 series concerning 3D acceleration so that the open-source Linux drivers can begin to support the newer ATI graphics processors. It has taken longer than expected for AMD to complete and release this information, but it’s now available. AMD has released the fundamental Linux code needed to begin fostering the development of an open-source R600 3D driver. Furthermore, this code also concerns the latest R700 series of graphics processors! The microcode for the newest GPUs has also been released.”

With the introduction of the new Intel Core i7 processor architecture, the company affectionately known as “Chipzilla” has once again topped itself in terms of performance.   Intel planted a gift in the Core i7 launch in the form of the Core i7 920. This is Intel’s entry level Core i7 processor which runs at a stock speed of 2.66 GHz, not too far off from the high-end Core i7 965 Extreme model which runs at 3.2 GHz.   While the high-end Core i7 965 sells for over $1,000, the Core i7 920 sells for a more palatable $300, considering the performance that this chip is capable of with a little elbow grease.  In terms of their base technology, the Core i7 965 and 920 are the same chip–they simply run at different frequencies.  While overclocking the Core i7 is a bit different compared to previous generation Core 2 processors, most of the same principles apply to these new systems.

We grabbed a new Core i7 920 processor off a retail shelf and decided to see how far we could clock it up.  We want to give potential buyers an idea of what overclocking with the Core i7 is like, along with how much performance could be gained, how to deal with heat, and how power consumption comes into play.  Come on by the site and take a look…

2008 Video Game Awards Review

Date: 12-28-2008 By Vlad Mihaiescu

Some of the worst video games that I reviewed this year were some of the top winners (or at least nominees) and I am absolutely shocked. For starters, the game that won best multi-player game and also the best PC game, Valve’s Left 4 Dead is a complete dud. I do not see how anyone in their right mind could nominate this game for anything except the worst game of 2008. The game was filled with graphic bugs, the multi-player was very limited, extremely redundant and boring and no real gamer will tell you otherwise. As mentioned earlier I absolutely believe that some of the awards given were completely rigged. I stand behind that statement, and unless Spike TV is willing to completely disclose their funding over the last year I don’t think that they have any merit whatsoever to challenge my statement.

Intel X58 Extreme DX58SO Motherboard Review motherboards.org

Author: Ben Sun Date: 12-28-2008

Intel has a lot to be happy about with their new CPU and X58 family launch, firmly taking over the enthusiast market with new processors that are clearly faster than the last generation. The DX58SO motherboard is nearly as fast as the other boards on the platform, with minor differences due to the board manufacturer tweaks in performance. Feature-wise, the DX58SO has done away with legacy connections like IDE and PS/2. The only troubling thing about this board is the layout, with SATA ports that are not sideways facing and the positioning of the 8-pin power connector. I wish everyone a safe and prosperous Holidays as this article was written in the midst of them.

Title: E- Power Tiger 1000W Power Supply Review at Overclockers Online
Link: http://www.overclockersonline.net/?page=articles&num=2361
Quote: The Tiger 1000W by E-Power is a mixed bag, but then again aren’t all
products?  The Tiger series is intended for those looking for a lot of
power, with bells and whistles. We can call that the high end / mainstream
market. Starting with things that could be improved, voltage regulation
could be a tad better. From 50% load to full load with heat, the 12V rail
dipped a quarter of a degree, along with the 5V rail which took a hit as
well.  What worked well?  The unit is dead silent, the finish is
spectacular, the price is spot on and the cables are wonderful.  All
together though, for $200 and a bit, you get a great performing unit with
equally good looks, and another big plus, it is quiet and incredibly
functional.

InsideHW.com has reviewed AMD Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition. Here is a quote from this review:

“With design of new K10 microarchitecture, by majority of critics, AMD bit off more than they can chew. In beginning K10 wasn’t designed for two or single core CPUs. For less cores it was necessary to take “rejected” CPUs and disable faulty cores, and that isn’t a cheap process. CPU with disabled core still has same surface area as quad core, and disabled part is totally useless. This can be profitable if yield is relatively low which will result in large quantities of “defected” CPUs. One of the reasons why we waited so long for KUMA core is low yield of Phenom CPUs which resulted in low amount of rejected CPUs that can be converted to Phenom X2…”

Pantech C630 reviewed @ TestFreaks.com

December 23rd, 2008 by Kristofer

Title: Pantech C630 reviewed @ TestFreaks.com

Review Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/pantech-c630-gray/

Review Snipit:
“Pantech has recently introduced a very affordable basic phone, it retails for only $130 without contract or no commitment pricing, and $40 with a two year contract with AT&T, it seems it would be cheaper in the long run to buy the phone without contract right? Anyway the Pantech C630 is a basic phone that does have some great features, but it doesn’t really focus on them, it’s primary focus is to be a phone, not a mini-computer, or a text messaging device, but just a phone to make and receive calls. The C630 does have Bluetooth, MP3 player, camera, GPS Navigation and more, but it’s a phone first and foremost, and a very good one at that. It’s form factor is the candy bar style, it’s slim, lightweight and overall very well made, it feels solid and sturdy in your hands and it’s easy to use. “

USB Flash Drive Comparison - 21 Tested and Compared @ TestFreaks.com

Title: USB Flash Drive Comparison - 21 Tested and Compared @ TestFreaks.com

Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/usb-flash-memory/usb-flash-drive-comparison-21-tested-and-compared/

Review Snipit:
“So I’ve got 21 USB drives ranging from 1gig to 64gigs in capacity from companies like Super Talent, OCZ, Patriot, Swiss Memory, Corsair, ATP and a few others throw in for good measure. I’m only testing 1+ gig drives as I feel that below that they’re rather useless at this point in time.

I’ve been testing these drives for quite some time to create a comparison chart to see which is the best, I was doing this for an article, but also to satisfy my own curiosity as well to see just which one is the best.

So read on to see which drive is the best of the best in terms of performance in both read and write testing. “

Netbook Round-up: Lenovo Ideapad S10, Asus Eee 904HA, Acer Aspire One and Smoothbook Slice

http://www.techspot.com/review/135-netbook-comparison-roundup/

It can’t be argued that 2008 was the year of the netbook. Asus is credited with officially bringing the first netbook to market last year with their Eee PC, but as many first adopters will tell you, companies rarely “get it right” on their first at bat and the Eee PC was no different.

A big second wave of netbooks arrived in mid-2008 and as expected, improvements were made all around. These netbooks offered larger screens capable of higher resolutions, better storage mediums (either SSD or traditional hard drives), and the option to have Windows XP pre-installed.

Today we will be taking a look at four popular netbooks from four different manufacturers: Lenovo, Acer, Smooth Creations and Asus. While all of the netbooks here today share similar hardware specs, each is vastly different and unique in its own right. Built quality, screen size, keyboard layout and touchpad implementation are only a few of the many aspects that will be covered in-depth.

Call of Duty - World at War - 360 Review

Date: 11-21-2008 By Vlad Mihaiescu

In the last couple of years there has been an abundance off WWII titles, and after doing a bit of research the fad about WWII does not look to be slowing down. Lets face it; war sells and part of me wants that a percentage from the profits to be donated to war veterans, but I seriously doubt it that gaming companies will be willing to share a small profit with the heroes that they exploit. From a WWII and a shooter perspective, Call of Duty - World at War is a successful game. The storyline itself is not very long, but this game’s backbone lies with the multiplayer. Not only can you deathmatch this game online in multiple game modes such as capture the flag or free-for-all, but there is also a co-op campaign where you and your buddies can team up and bring justice, chaos and mayhem to the Axis forces. I need to do a review for Brothers in Arms as soon as possible, but until I see what that game is all about I have to say that if you’re going to own a WWII shooter, Call of Duty - World at War should be it.

NEW CONTENT (Visual) - Sapphire’s Watercooled Radeon HD 4870 X2 ATOMIC Edition

QUOTE: “I really do love the launch of a new ATI based graphics card, because as soon as it’s released I’m on the back of Sapphire asking when an ATOMIC and TOXIC version of the card is coming.

Attention to detail on this card is nothing short of fantastic and I have to honestly say that when the card was delivered I half expected it to be hand cuffed to the courier. With all that said and done, let’s begin and see exactly what we have going on here.”

InsideHW.com has reviewed Silicon Power 2.5inch Solid State Disk 64GB. Here is a quote from this review:

“First thing that crosses everyone’s mind upon mention of SSD is high price or, lower price that results in lower performances (much lower even compared with Hard Disk Drives). It doesn’t have to be always like that and many manufacturers are trying to change that prejudice when it comes to SSDs. One of those companies is Silicon Power from which we got one MLC SSD 64GB with low price (for an SSD) and promising specifications…”

MacTrak from GadgetTrak: Advanced Anti-Theft For OS X

December 21st, 2008 by Kristofer

Hopefully this year, Santa will be placing a MacBook/MacBook Pro/MacBook Air under your tree. If you are lucky enough to get one of these laptops, you will quickly realize that they are a hot commodity. So, the last thing you would want is to have someone walk off with it. Other than physically locking down the machine, there is now another way to keep your Mac safe and get some peace of mind. GadgetTrak is a theft recovery and loss prevention solution company specializing in mobile devices. To help keep your MacBook secure, they have released MacTrak, which is the equivalent of a LoJack for your laptop.

MacTrak installs on your machine and uses the built iSight camera and Wi-Fi to help locate and recover your machine. The program allows the user to activate MacTrak from any computer in the world and as long as the stolen Mac is powered and connected to the Internet. It will photograph the perpetrator and geolocate the machine and send this information to a preselected email and also be uploaded to the user’s Flickr account.

Basically, if you own any iteration Mac and run Leopard, then this should be the first program you install on your machine! So let’s get a better look.

Garmin Oregon 300 @ InsideHW

December 21st, 2008 by Kristofer

InsideHW.com has reviewed Garmin Oregon 300 GPS device. Here is a quote from this review:

“This time we have tested Garmin GPS device and we were very satisfied with its performance. Oregon 300 seems robust at first glance, and it has a single button, for power control. It has touch screen display which can be locked if it’s needed. Design of this device contributes to the fact that it fits pretty good in both hands, but because of slight extension on right side, we must notice that it provides more natural handling to right-handed users. However, no matter in which hand you are holding it, navigation commands are very easy to get to…”

G.SKILL FM-25S2S-64GB SSD Drive Review @ Rbmods

December 21st, 2008 by Kristofer

G.SKILL FM-25S2S-64GB SSD Drive Review:

Link: http://www.rbmods.com/Articles/Gskill/SSD_64GB/1.php

Quote: SSD drives are slowly making it on to the market but the prices still scare alot of people of. The SSD drive does not have any movable parts which makes it completely silent and also more well performing than our current harddrives. Price and small drives are still the main issue but I have seen over 200GB drives hitting the market already although today we are taking a look at a 64GB SATA 2 drive from Gskill.

OCZ Special Ops PC3-10666 2×2GB @ APH Networks

December 21st, 2008 by Kristofer

Title: OCZ Special Ops PC3-10666 2×2GB @ APH Networks

* Description: Oh, what a difference two years make. When we reviewed the OCZ
Special Ops Urban Elite PC2-6400 2×1GB in December 2006, DDR2 was just
gaining momentum, costs as much as performance DDR3 costs now, and the
revolutionary first wave of Core 2 Duos 6-series for desktops and 7-series
for mobile were still fresh in the hands of die-hard enthusiasts. I was lucky
enough to be an owner of a then-amazing Core 2 Duo T7400 based laptop, and a
significantly overclocked E6300, in which I still have to this day. In those
days, I was enjoying a relatively care-free life in high school, compared to
my current uber intense engineering schedule. It’s kind of funny how I’m
still the Editor-in-Chief at APH Network despite all this — I guess this
provides me with some sort of relief and entertainment. Heck, I lived in
another city towards the end of 2006. Do I miss the days? To be honest, I
sort of do. As I run the last stretch and my university first term pulls to
an end with less than two weeks before finals, and daily prayers of, “Dear
God, I need a miracle”, and piling up tons of review products before I
actually write about them, here’s one that separates itself from the rest:
the OCZ Special Ops PC3-10666 2×2GB. While the OCZ Special Ops is a pair of
value gaming DDR3 RAM, being ‘value-oriented’ does not mean it has to ‘look’
value-oriented. With a cool looking heatsink following the tradition of the
original, comes with OCZ’s excellent warranty program, and a retail price of
approximately $130 USD for 2×2GB at press time, it’s definitely something
would not miss your search. Let’s pop open the package and see how the OCZ
Special Ops PC3-10666 2×2GB dual channel kit steps up.

How to Speed up Windows Explorer in Vista @ OCModShop

December 21st, 2008 by Kristofer

Windows Vista of course, has lots of extra features, which usually means you need a faster computer to keep the same speed as the previous generation. One of the most basic things people do with their comptuers is browse for files using Explorer. Sometimes you can think your comptuer is really slow, because Explorer is busy getting video or photo thumbnails, or doing other automatic things to “make your life easier”.

Explorer can be made to display faster if you toggle some of these optional features off. The result of these tweaks mean your Vista computer will only work faster, at a cost of some eye candy.

TitleCorsair TX850 Power Supply Review

Summary: Once upon a time, a small company known for memory decided to follow in the footsteps of another company known for memory and start producing power supplies. In the months and years since then, Corsair has gone on to be one of the most highly regarded companies out there when it comes to releasing good quality units at a good price.

Today, I’m looking at the brand new TX850, an 850W unit with a single whopping 70A 12V rail and four 8 pin PCI-E connectors to go with it. Will this bad boy continue to bring the goods for Corsair, or come up short? Let’s find out.

If you are looking for an iPod dock that oozes features and offers sound quality to rival your hi-fi, you’ll be disappointed by the i-Station25. It doesn’t even include a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for more power and longer playing time, battery-level indicator, FM/DAB tuner, or clock! But if you want a dock that’s small, easy to use and sounds above par, the i-Station2 is great. Its innovative accelerometer technology is a neat touch too, allowing you to simply turn the dock sideways for a better view of video and photos. The two LED lights let you know when the speakers are positioned to deliver the best performance, and the accelerometer automatically adjusts the output to the correct left/right audio separation. Plugged or unplugged, the the i-Station25 simply lets you play your favourite tunes out loud for very little financial outlay. A cracking little device!”

“The performance of Kingston’s HyperX DDR3-2000 3Gb kits is in no doubt, one of the fastest we’ve tested to date. It offers great cooling features, good overclocking abilities and nice looks to match. However, it’s a shame about the cost of these kits … I guess that’s the price premium people pay for being the first to have the latest and the greatest. Rate at DDR3-2000, that’s PC3-16000 spec, Kingston can happily take the crown for being the first to release the world’s fastest Triple Channel kits. ”

It’s rare that we get the opportunity to give back the community in such a way that truly affects peoples’ lives, beyond just a simple door prize or contest trinket.  However, In the spirit of the holiday season, we feel fortunate and proud to have been given the opportunity to do something pretty special for three very interesting, cool people we’re sure you’ll enjoy meeting.

Earlier this quarter, we teamed up with Intel, in an effort to hold a very special sort of contest and promotion called “Need A Tech Makeover”.  The contest allowed us to give back to the community and help out three deserving people whose lives were desperately in need of a technology face-lift.  These three lucky winners would each be awarded $5,000 worth of new desktops and notebooks based on Intel Centrino 2 and Core 2 technology, as well as all the required peripherals to take full advantage of all their new computing horsepower.

Recently, we announced our three lucky winners, a small town Performing Arts group called Steps Off Broadway, a stage 4 cancer survivor, Christine from South Carolina, and Susan from Martha’s Vineyard Fiber Farm.

TechwareLabs has published a review of the AeroCool AeroRacer Pro PC Case. Here’s a clip from the review:

Quote: Buying an awesome tricked out computer case is the nerdy equivalent to buying a suped up hot rod of a car. The case is the outward manifestation of awesomeness inside. AeroCool does its best to combine car and computer with its AeroRacer Pro case. Unfortunately AeroRacer won’t get you as much attention with the ladies as a real car, but it terms of nerd street cred, it works rather nicely. Also unlike a car, this case won’t break the bank with its cost. So does the AeroCool AeroRacer Pro have what it takes to leave others behind in the dust? Lets take a look and find out.

NEW CONTENT (Cases, Cooling and Power Supplies) - Exclusive Review of CoolIT’s Domino Advanced Liquid Cooling

QUOTE: “2008 has been a break-out year for CoolIT Systems. The company launched several new products in the first half of the year. Among them was a full chassis cooling solution built with the SilverStone TJ07 and the Freezone Elite, the follow up Freezone that launched the company into enthusiast stardom. Towards the second half of the year CoolIT Systems struck again with the PURE and PURE ST. We are now a stones throw away from 2009 and the company is back with yet another release, the CoolIT Systems Domino Advanced Liquid Cooling (or A.L.C.)

The Domino Advanced Liquid Cooling is a lot like the PURE we reviewed a few months back. Both are liquid cooled and do not have an active TEC (peltier) to cool the liquid below ambient. The Domino is a new design, though; nearly every component is fresh, from the CPU block to the firmware controlling the pump and fan. The active digital display is a first for CoolIT as well and to be honest I am surprised to see it on their new entry level product. Generally such features start out on the flagship product and make their way down.”

NEW CONTENT (Cases, Cooling and Power Supplies) - Exclusive Preview of Thermaltake Xpressar Phase Change Unit

QUOTE: “Thermaltake chose Computex as the venue to showcase their first entry into the phase change market. Media reaction was strong even though details were thin. Since Computex more details have emerged about the Thermaltake Xpressar, but few have been able to get their hands on a unit, until now.

Last month Thermaltake was able to ship TweakTown an early engineering sample Xpressar unit to get our thoughts on the cooling capacity and proposed retail trim. The cooling unit is still going through design changes but we are told the final production units are not too far away. Because of this ongoing development we will not be able to do a full review of the Xpressar today, but when the final retail product is available we will have a full feature length article. Until then, this is mainly a teaser, but we will be able to answer many of the questions that surround the Xpressar.”

iXBT Labs Review: ASUS P5Q Deluxe Motherboard

“ASUS P5Q Deluxe motherboard is a good example of a top model, which does not irritate common users with its exotic features for ‘hardcore gamers’ and the like. But this motherboard works out its high price not resorting to quantitative measures.”
