News! -Late Night Edition!

October 9th, 2008 by Kristofer

Whether you are a professional mechanical engineer, architect or builder, civil engineer, woodworker, hobbyist or student, TurboCAD has you covered. Plus, there are optional, specialised architectural and mechanical toolsets available for purchase, as well as plug-ins that extend TurboCAD’s capabilities into 3D animation, furniture design, Computer Aided Machining (CAM), and more. But let’s not get too excited - working with 3D objects in a 2D environment is an acquired skill and you’ll have to spend hours upon hours on training and practise before you even scratch the surface of a comprehensive program like this. TurboCAD 15 Pro offers a raft of features and new tools, and although you need to be a skilled designer to appreciate most of them, the software offers plenty of scope for you to grow into. If you’re put off by the price and learning curve of AutoCAD LT 2009, yet want something more advanced than TurboCAD 15 Deluxe, TurboCAD 15 Pro should be just the ticket.”

Title: AMD’s MultiView On Linux @ Phoronix
Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12931
Summary: “Introduced in the Catalyst 8.8 Linux driver and further stabilized within Catalyst 8.9 was AMD’s MultiView technology. MultiView makes it possible to use multiple GPUs on the same system not for Linux CrossFire but for driving multiple display heads. Using MultiView on Linux you can easily drive four, six, or even eight screens. In fact, up to 32 displays are theoretically supported on a single system (permitting you have enough graphics cards and PCI Express slots). MultiView also allows for OpenGL acceleration across all displays and does not rely upon Xinerama. In this article we are taking a brief look at this multi-GPU multi-monitor feature catered towards AMD’s workstation customers.”

AMD’s ATI Radeon HD 4550 passive 512M

Link:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/HD_4550_passive

Brief:
AMD’s new Radeon HD 4550 comes in a passively cooled version without fan. Such a noiseless experience is crucial in media PC designs where you don’t want to be distracted by any fan noise. Also included is a native HDMI and DisplayPort output for connection to your big screen. With a price of around $50 the card even offers some potential for casual gaming.

“Overall, I’m very pleased by it, and I’m not only talking about the great performance it delivers, it also has a great look, especially with its 2 red LEDs on the fan lighting up the whole cooler. No surprise it received the “design & Innovation award 2008” at Computex Taipei … With 8 heatpipes, 4 sets of Aluminum fins and a pure copper base, the V8 offers excellent thermal performance. It can easily cool an overclocked CPU with no problems at all. ”

ASUS M3N78 Pro Motherboard Review motherboards.org

Author: Benjamin Sun Date: 10-09-2008

ASUS tends to make high quality motherboards that are popular with a wide variety of hardcore enthusiasts and the ASUS M3N78 Pro has the features to contend with the best of the AMD chipsets available. The integrated graphics on the M3N78 Pro are not up to par with the ATI 790GX motherboards, but on the other hand run a wee bit cooler, can save more energy with HybridPower and are sufficient to run H.264 content. Overclocking features are adequate, but this board is really not for the hardcore gamer or enthusiast buyer. As a HTPC motherboard this is great as the onboard video has HDMI and has the ability to run 7.1 surround- sound through the HDMI port. NVIDIA really needs to launch a faster integrated graphics processor if they intend to compete with ATI on pure performance comparisons.

Palit Radeon HD 4870 X2 Video Card Review

Date: 10-09-2008 By Ben Sun

As it is, the 4870 X2 is the fastest available single video card on the market today bar none. With the increased efficiency in power that the 4870 requires compared to the GTX260, the HD 4870 X2 delivers great performance without requiring four 6-pin power connectors as two GTX 260s would require. The video card market is constantly in a state of flux with cards being released, but rest assured, two 4870X2 cards would offer the highest performance bar none on the market today. Palit’s version of the ATI HD 4870 X2 is an excellent card, easily besting the GeForce GTX280 from NVIDIA in every test. In an apple to apples comparison, the 4870 X2 is nearly 10-20% faster across the board. Of course NVIDIA would argue that the 4870 X2 should be compared to two GTX 260s due to pricing changes.

Kill Bill Volume Two Blu-Ray Review @ Ascully.com

Quote

“I’m sure you have read other reviews of this movie by now. Most reviews compare Volume 1 to Volume 2, how original. Some reviewers compare The Kill Bill two movie set to other Tarantino offerings, boring. There are those camps of folks out there who like to analyze these movies until they fall apart, unnecessary. I think I’ll take a different approach……..”

OCIA.net has posted their review of the OCZ ModXStream 600w Power Supply.  Below is a direct quote from the review:
The OCZ ModXStream 600 is a lot of power supply in a relatively small package. Boasting 25A on each of its dual +12v rails, plus an additional 25A each for the +3.3v and +5v, the ModXStream 600 seems at least as capable if not more so than many power supplies with higher wattage ratings.

BurnOutPC.com has posted their review on the Thermaltake M9D (VI4000BWS) Chassis,

Quote
“Thermaltake expanded their mid-tower range of cases with the M9D earlier this year. It’s available with or without the window in the side panel and it features a huge 23cm fan on the side to help cool down the hardware inside. It’s a trend these days to incorporate a larger fan into the case, Antec is doing it and so are some of the other manufacturers. The larger the fan, the slower the RPM, but the higher the CFM. Which is the whole idea behind these types of fans. Let’s see if it works out for the M9D casing”

Kingwin Elite 3.5″ SATA to USB/eSATA Hard Drive Enclosure

October 9th, 2008 by Kristofer

Portable hard drive enclosures have become very popular, so much so that many HDD manufacturers are now selling them in addition to their regular hard drives. This is nice, but from my experience it’s cheaper to just buy an empty enclosure and put your own hard drive into it, but which enclosure is right for you?

Up on the review block today I’ve got the Kingwin Elite 3.5” SATA to USB and eSATA hard drive enclosure. From my time with this product I’ve found it to be one of the best choices in an external enclosure, it looks great, it’s well made, and it works well.

Title: DXG-595V HD High-Definition Video Camera Reviewed @ TestFreaks.com

Review Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/dxg-595v-hd-high-definition-video-camera/

Review Snipit:
“One such company that makes HD video cameras and sells them at very inexpensive prices is DXG, most people balk at the quality vs price with these cameras, they can’t believe that a sub-$200 camera can produce a quality video. I’ve got the DXG-595V HD camera for review today, it’s DXGs flagship camera, and by the HD in the name we can see it’s a hi-def camera, and it can record up to 1080p resolution “

Cooler Master HAF 932 Case Review @ Ninjalane

October 9th, 2008 by Kristofer

Ninjalane has just posted their review of the new super case from Cooler Master the HAF 932. This is one of the few pre-mods that we can actually endorse, and that’s saying a lot.

Subject: Cooler Master HAF 932 Case Review @ Ninjalane
URL: http://www.ninjalane.com/display.aspx?docname=haf932

Quote: First Impressions are the lasting ones. Still you cannot always judge a book by its cover, and the Cooler Master HAF 932 is one of these situations. Most people will either love the look, or just down right hate it. Still once you get past the “Mad Max” aesthetics of hardline cages and mesh over every opening you will begin to start respecting what the HAF 932 has to offer including the incredible airflow from 3 x 230mm fans and 1 x 140mm fan on the rear.
