Digit-Life Review: Shuttle XPC Glamor SN68PTG6 Deluxe

Excerpt:
“It’s up to our readers to decide whether this enclosure is actually glamorous, but we cannot say that G6 is radically different from G5 in design. As for the insides, there are only minimal differences. On the whole, owing to the chipset, this model is a good choice for a generic computer with rich functionality, which is very high in this DELUXE modification.”

TITLE: Synology DS408 4-Drive SATA RAID Gigabit NAS @ Benchmark Reviews

DESCRIPTION: As a network administrator for several small and medium businesses, I am used to seeing pedestal servers with expensive Windows Server edition Operating Systems running for the sole purpose of serving files out to the workgroup or domain.  Such environments has made it necessary to look for money-saving opportunities in the office environment.  A few years back Network Attached Storage server hit the scene with a price tag comparable to the alternative, but the NAS products offered in today’s market are far superior and cost far less than before.  Synology has pioneered the NAS server into mainstream, and now offers devices to fit every range and environment from home to enterprise.  Benchmark Reviews has the good fortune to performance test the 4-drive SATA Disk Station DS408 RAID NAS.

NEW CONTENT (Visual) - MSI Radeon HD 4670 Graphics Card

QUOTE: “Today we find ourselves once again looking at one of the new mid-range ATI based graphics cards. The particular card we’re looking at today is the HD 4670 which impressed us at launch just the other week.

With MSIs version in hand, we will see if it can manage to impress us like the Sapphire did. The mid-range market is no doubt one of the most important segments for both AMD and NVIDIA, as this is where the quantity is found.”

ATI Radeon HD 4670 Video Card Review

Date: 10-07-2008 By Ben Sun

The HD 4670 is a great card for what it was designed for. The ability to run every game out there especially those supporting DX10.1 means that the HD 4670 will play games with the full features turned on if you want to. ATI says that the HD 4670 consumes less than 75W under full load, meaning that it nearly offers the performance of the HD 3850 in almost every situation without the extra power that the HD 3850 requires to operate properly. ATI has hit a homerun in many respects with the HD 4xxx family of video cards. The HD 4670 has similar performance to its older brother, the HD 3850 and better pricing. NVIDIA and ATI are both competing for the video card dollar and a competitive price war has the benefit of getting better cards for a lower price than the manufacturer would like, but in the end run it benefits the consumer.

Thecus N5200BR NAS Server Review motherboards.org

Author: Doc Overclock Date: 10-07-2008

The N5200BR is a computer in its own right and the ability to back up files onto a file server and use it as a FTP server and other uses is well worth the price when balanced in the whole. The amount of energy the N5200BR consumes is less than a normal PC as the CPU is a Celeron-M 600MHz. As a file server, the N5200BR is an excellent example of using old hardware for new uses that work. There is nothing to complain about with the 5200BR, it is a solid well built and thought-out system that employs simple ideas and makes the user feel at ease with the unit from the point of entry of its installation to final backup of your files and information. The 5200BR is a two thumbs up Editors Choice product, good job Thecus.

InsideHW.com has posted article about Biostar TPower I45 motherboard. You can read a clip from review:

“After few top models of biggest world motherboard manufacturers we got in our test lab “runner” from BIOSTAR. How much this company invested in overclock possibilities of their motherboards and how they have done their job we will try to show you on their TPOWER I45 model. As opposite to BIOSTAR T series that is easily recognizable for its blue PCB, TPOWER I45 model has black PCB. Layout is very good and it shows that BIOSTAR invested significant amount of time in its design. First interesting detail, that shows how much BIOSTAR takes overclock serious, is little detail in cooling solution…”

Quote: “Today we had the opportunity to conduct an email interview with Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff, Co-Founder and President of Razer. Unlike other presidents, Robert is very active with the community and can be seen at gaming events such as LAN Parties. Like its president; the entire company is active in the gaming community. They also provide sponsorships to professional gamers and events. After all, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

So far Razer has been very successful getting their professional game-based hardware to the market. Razer’s products tend to receive high-scores in reviews and a lot of positive feedback among both gamers and end-users. Razer’s success in the last few years has received a lot of attention from others in the hardware market. Microsoft’s hardware division even teamed up with them to license some of its technologies. So today, we are going to present Robert with some (intrusive) questions and figure out what’s going on and what we should expect.”

With the recent run of newer and more affordable graphics cards from ATI, it’s almost easy to forget that there’s already a sub-$200 frame-rate cruncher called the Radeon HD 4850.  Based on the same RV770 chip as the more powerful, yet more expensive HD 4870, the HD 4850 ships with the same 800 stream processors, 40 texture units, and 16 ROPs that have made these cards such hot items.  The main area where they differ, other than clock speeds, is in regard to memory.  While the HD 4870 ships with high-end GDDR5 memory chips, the HD 4850 finds itself loaded with 512 MB of more mainstream GDDR3.

A major caveat with the Radeon HD 4850 that has arisen, however, is the excessive heat that gets produced by the RV770 GPU.  It seemed the single slot reference cooling solution had a tough time handling the heat output of the RV770.  With heat being a concern, and manufacturers having more time to tinker with their cards, we weren’t surprised to find out that two of ATI’s major partners, HIS and Sapphire, had two new cards waiting in the wings, each with their own ramped up clock speeds and with some superior cooling thrown in as well.  Come on by the site and check out the Sapphire Toxic Radeon HD 4850 512M and HIS Radeon HD 4850 IceQ4 TurboX…

Title: Everything You Need to Know About Digital Cameras
Link: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/243
Category: Tutorials

Summary:
Everything average users need to know before buying a digital camera, including types of cameras, megapixels, sensors and more.

Here is a snippet:
“When digital cameras first made their appearance, all you had to do to make the best purchase was to choose the camera with the highest number of megapixels. The camera with the most megapixels usually also had the best other components and features. Over the last few years, however, digital cameras have changed so rapidly and the number of megapixels has increased so dramatically that the number of megapixels is no longer an adequate indication of camera quality. In this tutorial we will show everything laypersons need to know before buying a digital camera.”

Sapphire Radeon HD 3450 LP

” When readers come to ASE Labs and see a graphics card review, they expect to find a high speed entry with a bunch of bells and whistles. There is another section of the market that ASE Labs reaches and that is the mainstream builders and entertainment PC builders. These types of buyers have very different requirements than the so-called enthusiast. Speed and performance take a back seat to form factor, noise, and features. Most small cases only support low profile cards and the Sapphire Radeon HD 3450 steps in to provide the video on your entertainment system. ”

“Mainstream users will be glad that ATI haven’t forgotten about them. The Sapphire Radeon HD 4670 does offer decent performance at a price that’s irresistably attractive. You also get great features which include the support for DX10.1, x24 custom AA, HDMI, HDCP, CrossfireX, as well as lower power consumption.”

Title: AMD Radeon HD 3300 / 790GX @ Phoronix
Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12917
Summary: “Back in March we looked at the AMD Radeon HD 3200 graphics with AMD’s 780G Chipset and found it to be a reputable performer. Its performance was almost identical to that of the discrete Radeon HD 2400PRO graphics card and was capable of running some Linux games at a playable frame-rate. Now though AMD’s top-end IGP is 790GX Chipset with Radeon HD 3300 graphics. We have been testing an AMD 790GX motherboard from Elitegroup Computer Systems for the past several weeks and today we are delivering our Linux benchmarks of this newest AMD integrated graphics processor.”

Title: QNAP TS-409 Network Attached Storage System @ APH Networks

* Description: Ever since Junior High computer labs, all the documents we use
are stored on network drives alone — because the students will be using a
different computer pretty much every time, and Deep Freeze are deployed on
every workstation so smart-arse 15 year olds won’t be messing around the
computers all that much. At home, however, all my documents are stored on my
computer’s local hard disks. I’ve never really given much thought into an
always-on network drive because, well, this type of system never really
caught my attention in the first place. As time progresses, my local area
network became more and more complicated and filled up with an ever expanding
count of computers. The need for a central data storage device due to this
phenomenon became more evident. Almost two years ago, I’ve reviewed the
Thermaltake Muse NAS RAID network attached storage device — which brought
quite a revolutionary change of computer usage habits in my house, at least
for me. From regular data transfers, data backups, local file hosting, to
media streaming, I’ve always wondered how I ever lived without it for all
these years. There was one problem with the Muse NAS RAID though: The
performance did not meet my expectations. Looking for a high performance,
easy to use, loaded with features NAS device, it seems that I’ve finally
found a solution — the QNAP TS-409 Turbo NAS. My major concern: It better be
fast. So let’s see how it goes.
