NEW CONTENT (News) - DFI exclusively shows us its LANPARTY UT X58 mobo
QUOTE: “We visited Eric, Jarry and Jet at the DFI headquarters in Taipei today where they gave us an exclusive up-close look at a working sample of their forthcoming LANPARTY UT X58 motherboard.
We got a look at the first revision of the board and sadly the new heatpipe cooler was not quite ready for us to take photos of. This board will get a similar made by Thermalright cooler as seen on older boards, but this time around DFI has decided to make the coolers themselves to try and reduce costs. It was mentioned that while the cooler will be similar, it will be improved by allowing users to use their own after market or custom cooling equipment or “weapons” as Jarry put it, whereas with other brand motherboards that is not always that easy to do. That did allow us to get an unobstructed view of the no fuss high-end enthusiast performance motherboard. Jarry Chang, the head engineer and designer at DFI, had some interesting points to make about the LANPARTY UT X58 and much of it made perfect sense.”

“Today we are checking out one of the most expensive and cool lasers ever offered. The Wicked Lasers Sonar II produces a bright blue beam that can be seen in daylight.
Lasers are cool and many of us have grown up watching movies like Star Wars where the laser is an integral part of the action. If you have ever dreamed of owning your own laser, today you can. We are going to look at the new high-end Sonar II from Wicked Lasers. This laser actually uses the same type of beam as your PS3 or Blu-ray player.”

NEW CONTENT (Casing & Cooling) - NZXT Khaos Full Tower Enclosure
QUOTE: “NZXT began life in 2004 and had a goal of producing a product line that was geared toward enthusiasts and gamers. From the beginning, they have shown a love for those who are looking to eke out that little bit of extra performance from there machine. Even in the beginning when they used pretty basic design builds for some of their initial products, these folks have always added something to the build to make it different from everybody else.
Since those humble beginnings, NZXT has worked hard to enhance that enthusiast outlook and are now in the market of creating truly unique enclosures and have even added power supplies to the mix. All this brings us to today’s piece, the NZXT Khaos. This enclosure features a full tower design that offers some innovations not found in your everyday case, which suits the company very well.”

Hidalgo Blu-Ray Review @ Ascully.com

Quote
“This is a story of a man and his horse. Simple as that. A man who has lost his own will to move ahead of the horrible things he has seen in his life, but who believes his horse can get him through the biggest challenge of his life. I think it’s safe to say that even though it’s a story with all the trappings of a classic tale, it’s still missing something…”

XFX 9800GTX+ SLI Video Card Review
Date: 10-06-2008 By Ben Sun
SLI mode on the 9800GTX+ was easy to enable and performance of two of these cards is faster than a single GeForce GTX280 card installed in some situations and nearly as fast in others. The power requirements are more but you get the performance of a faster card for a lower price. Performance of two 9800GTX+ cards in SLI in fact exceeds that of the Radeon HD 4870 X2 card from ATI meaning that two of these cards are as fast as any single card on the market today. The GeForce 9800GTX+ is a fast card, faster than the original 9800GTX. There are already 9800GTX cards that are overclocked higher than this however, and the target of this card the HD 4850 has healthy competition with this card. The wildcard is hardware acceleration for PhysX games which can make a huge difference in frame rate in supported applications.

Link: http://techgage.com/article/palit_radeon_hd_4870_sonic_dual_edition/
Quote: It’s no secret that the HD 4870 is one of the best overall GPUs on the market right now, but with so much selection from vendors, it’s hard to choose the “best” one. Palit has a definite winner with their Sonic Dual Edition though. It’s pre-overclocked, runs 20°C cooler than the reference design and carries no cost premium.

| ECS X48T-A Black Edition Motherboard Review |
 |
Author: Benjamin Sun Date: 10-06-2008
For those wanting an inexpensive X48 based motherboard this is a good choice, as the features are the same across the board and ECS uses high quality components like Solid Capacitors in their design and the board is $20 less expensive on Newegg at the moment than the next least expensive motherboard. From a performance point of view the ECS board behaves exactly like the other X48 based motherboards, which is a good thing. Where ECS has a problem with this board is in the single fan header which is obvious right out of the box. Digging into the BIOS, the overclocker will likely want to stay away from this board as it doesn’t give as many overclocking options compared to some other X48 boards on the market.

Thermaltake BlacX
” External hard drive storage is the technology that people are using to keep their data backed up in multiple locations in the current era of technology. There are good products and bad ones just the same but not all enclosures promise the same thing. The Thermaltake BlacX was probably the first unit to take a hard drive and turn it into the removable storage. Now you can easily keep multiple physical backups with ease using this product. Pretty interesting. ”

Does the ATP ToughDrive survive being driven over, immersed in water, set on fire, used as a dog chew toy, shot with an Airsoft gun, Frozen, TORCHED, and finally beaten with a hammer? See our amazing brutality in our video of this drive. Of course we tested the drive first and bring you our thoughts on why we feel this drive deserved our Editors Choice Award. Although the ATI Radeon HD 4850 and HD 4870 were launched nearly four months ago, they are both still exciting cards and we look forward to testing each and every one that enters our labs. For our latest article, we have another “TOP” card from ASUS in house, in the form of the EAH4870 TOP, which of course is a factory overclocked Radeon HD 4870.
Like most other HD 4870s on store shelves, the EAH4870 TOP sports 512MB of GDDR5 memory and a 256-bit memory bus. Additionally, the card features support for DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.1, and CrossFireX multi-GPU technology. What differentiates the EAH4870 TOP from most other 4870s is its factory overclock: the core clock pushes pixels at 815 MHz (ATI’s reference spec is 750 MHz) while the memory is set to 925 MHz (ATI reference is 900 MHz). Come on by the site and check it out…

Title: Phoronix Test Suite Brings Benchmarking To Mac OS X @ Phoronix
Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12915
Summary: “In the Phoronix Test Suite 1.2 “Malvik” release our flagship Linux benchmarking software was brought to OpenSolaris and FreeBSD. With Phoronix Test Suite 1.4 “Orkdal”, to be officially released later this year, we are now extending our test support to include Apple’s Mac OS X operating system. In Phoronix Test Suite 1.4 Alpha 2 that was released this morning there is full support for Mac OS X within this open-source benchmarking framework and there are about three dozen tests that will run “out of the box” in this environment. We believe this is now the most comprehensive benchmarking platform for Mac OS X and it allows real-world test results to be compared from Linux, OpenSolaris, and FreeBSD.”

Title: Evercool Royal Notebook Cooling Pad at Overclockers Online
Link: http://www.overclockersonline.net/?page=articles&num=2041
Quote: Though the tests were inconclusive, I really like laptop coolers
in general and the Evercool Royal is no exception. It is well-designed
and the “royal” theme is very attractive. The raised back is
ergonomically sound and is a feature my wrists welcome. Though its
effectiveness at cooling your laptop’s components is dubious, it does
make the surface cooler which equates to a more comfortable experience
if you use your laptop on your lap.
