iPhone 3G Review and Comparison: iPhone vs iPhone 3g

July 24th, 2008 by Kristofer

Most tech products need to evolve or lose their place in the market, Palm is one well know company that has
suffered because of their lack of innovation.  Products usually evolve, make significant changes for the better or make incremental improvements over previous generations, the newest iPhone dubbed the iPhone 3G is not an evolutionary upgrade but more of an incremental one. This does not mean that it is not a worthwhile upgrade.

Steve Jobs and Apple’s modus operandi is not to put all the bells and whistles in the 1st or 2nd generations of their products.  Instead, they slowly include them through software/firmware updates and model revisions.  The iPhone 3G primary goal is to address the wireless data speed that was severely crippled on the first iPhone because it relied on the slower EDGE data network.  The newest model is named after the faster wireless network that it uses.

As per the wikipedia entry on 3G: “It is often suggested by industry sources that 3G can be expected to provide 384 kbit/s at or below pedestrian speeds, but only 128 kbit/s in a moving car.”  These speeds are closer to DSL than dial up which the first iPhone clearly ran on.

Besides the speed upgrade in using 3G, the iPhone 3G also has true built in GPS.  Do these two features warrant upgrading from your original iPhone?

Today I will look at the iPhone 3G and compare it to its predecessor.
