| AMD Phenom 9850 X4 Black Edition CPU Review |
 |
Author: Ben Sun Date: 03-30-2008
One thing AMD is stressing is the upgradeability of their older motherboards to support their new Quad Core CPUs. AMD sent a list of compatible motherboards that are on AMD’s Recommended List and it includes older motherboards including the nForce 570 chipset M2N-32-SLI and the AMD 690 boards that were prevalent a couple of years ago. Newer boards like the AMD 790FX and NVIDIA GeForce 7050 and presumably the upcoming 780a are being tested and qualified but few if any are on the list at the moment. The other consideration is for the home builder wanting to build an inexpensive motherboard+CPU combo. The 9850 is retailing for $235, add a 780G motherboard from AMD or an equivalent NVIDIA integrated board like the 8300 and you’d have a system that’d be hard to match on the Intel side dollar for dollar, especially with the state of Intel’s graphics drivers not even supporting DX10 as of yet. As an upgrade to existing AMD systems is where this CPU will be the sweet spot. This is due to the fact that if you have a slower CPU, but still want a faster system, this is an easy buying decision to make and will most certainly speed your system up from an older AMD CPU.

We have just taken a look at some blistering fast DDR3 from SuperTalent. We’ve got the PC3-14400 on the bench that comes with timings of 7-7-7-21. This is some of the fastest DDR3 currently available and is now somewhat affordable. As DDR3 prices drop and the performance improves, we will see more of this on the market and in consumers rigs. Take a look and see how the DDR3-1800 ProjectX holds up!

When it comes to DDR3, this is some pretty high-end stuff. Right off the bat, its super low latencies help this memory achieve some pretty good numbers in all the benchmarks we ran. Throughout all my testing this memory was rock solid and thanks to the big heatspreaders the memory never became anywhere near hot (not that DDR3 runs overly hot, but more cooling is always appreciated when trying to pull off big overclocks). . .

TechwareLabs has published a review of the ATI Radeon HD3450. Here’s a clip from the review:
Quote: Many users are looking for a video card that will allow them to tak advantage of Vista’s new graphical features but are not iterested in playing games. This leaves them serching for an add-on video card that wont break the budget and yet still powerful enough to run things like Aero and Flip-3D. We test the ATI HD3450 to see if this card fits this need and bring you real world testing and results.

We’re writing to let you all know that we have just posted a new article at HotHardware in which we evaluate Cooler Master’s innovative COSMOS S chassis. Like the original COSMOS, the new S variant has what appear to be bar-like handles along both sides of its top and bottom edges. And its general shape is reminiscent of the original COSMOS as well. The COSMOS S, however, has a new titanium and glossy black finish that really stands out and its inputs and ventilation scheme are all somewhat different. Head on over to the site and check it out…

“While Zalman is famous enough for its quality PC cooling and liquid cooling devices as well as fans, modding accessories, PC enclosures, gaming headphones, and even 3D monitors, today we are going to review a “ballon d’essai” of quite a different domain — a “gun style” gaming mouse.”

BurnOutPC.com has just posted their review on the NHP-2200 Northbridge cooler from Nexus.
Quote
“The Nexus NHP-2200 is fully constructed out of copper to get the best possible performance. By using almost pure copper material Nexus managed to squeeze out the best possible performance. The North bridge cooler has tons of fins and it’s design makes it compatible with any motherboard on the market.”

US Modular Cold Fusion DDR2-800 2×1GB Memory Kit Reviewed @
TheTechLounge
Quote:
“US Modular’s enthusiast parts are all recent additions to their
portfolio. In fact, the Cold Fusion RAM is their first big, branded
push into the profitable arena, and it’s kicking off with the DDR2
reviewed here. While they’re mostly known for their portable hard
drives and USB flash drives, US Modular has been making system memory
in California long enough to know how to bin the good stuff and slap
some swanky blue heatspreaders on it. Of course, in order to make a
name for themselves, this memory will have to fly. Does Cold Fusion
have what it takes to stir up the ranks?”

* Title: TWM Performance Complete Short Shifter Kit @ APH Networks
* Description: It’s been quite a while since APH Networks, obviously the most well known highly dedicated car enthusiast website, took a look at what we’ve originated from — car reviewing. Lately we’ve gotten a little off track and got into all those computer products for some odd reason. But in all seriousness, take a look out on the streets. Here in North America, cars are so common, it’s not even funny. From 20 year old Buick sedans to the latest Acura CUVs, and then *gasp* there’s a high school kid driving their ricer that’s so low they can barely make it over a speed bump, wing so big and heavy that turned their car’s weight distribution into 40/60, decals on the side of their car from dozens of companies that they don’t even own parts from, and tinted windows that resemble those of an opaque black wall. Well here’s one for you: Performance modifications are more practical than visual modifications. Driving a standard transmission (Or manual transmission, stick shift, or whatever you want to call it) myself, there’s all to one point that makes it so unique and fun to drive: The combination of the third pedal and the gearstick. Sitting in a few real performance vehicles lately, I wasn’t all in for their fuel economy, but their short throw manual really intrigued me. Moving back to my own car, here’s a cheap, easy do-it-yourself modification that makes your shifting all that much fun — the complete short shifter kit from TWM Performance. Adding onto that, we also had an aftermarket weighted shift knob to go along with it. Let’s see how it improves your driving experience.

OCIA.net has posted their review of the Silverstone GD02 HTPC Case. Below is a direct quote from the review:
“Today I have for review one of Silverstone’s newer HTPC series of cases, the Grandia GD02. If you liked the style of the full-size GD01 but were just looking for something a bit smaller, the GD02 might be right up your alley. It’s a micro-ATX size case, and like most HTPC enclosures it is designed to blend right into the other devices in your entertainment center, with a brushed aluminum finish on the front, available in either black or silver.“

NEW CONTENT (Visual) - Unified ForceWare 201.77 Exclusive Test
QUOTE: “In typical fashion, we love to bring you news of what’s happening before other sites. While everyone seems to be concentrating on the release of the 9800GTX today, the other day we saw a new driver pop up on the NVIDIA press FTP using a new 200 naming scheme.
Since the driver supports both current 3000 series Radeon offerings and the 9 series cards from NVIDIA, it seemed fair that they are what we should be comparing. We’ve got with us the HD 3870, HD 3870 X2, 9600GT, 9800GTX and 9800GX2.”

TITLE: ZOTAC GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB Video Card @ Benchmark Reviews
DESCRIPTION: On April 1st, 2008 NVIDIA will officially launch the GeForce 9800 GTX. It’s been over sixteen months since the GTX series was last launched, and with such a successful debut of the 8800 GTX back in 2006 there is a lot of skepticism surrounding the new 9800 GTX. Enthusiasts may recall that the last time around NVIDIA launched their new generation of graphic cards with the GTX and GTS models, and later followed up with some mid-range offerings and one slightly faster “Ultra”. This time around though, the playbook looked a lot different. First came the lower mid-level 9600 GT, and then the ultra-high level though, the playbook looked a lot different. First came the lower mid-level 9600 GT, and then the ultra-high level GeForce 9800 GX2 which utilized two G92 GPU cores. Benchmark Reviews has been fortunate enough to test the performance of ZOTAC’s new GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB video card in this article, model ZT-98XES2P-FSP.

ASUS GeForce 9800 GTX review
http://www.techspot.com/review/92-asus-geforce-9800-gtx/
Today will see the official launch of the GeForce 9800 GTX as the third member of the GeForce 9 series. Already we have seen the GeForce 9600 GT performing in the mainstream sector, the 9800 GX2 aimed at the high-end $500+ market, and now the 9800 GTX which may sit right in-between.
Based on the infamous G92 architecture that we have seen used time and time again, the GeForce 9800 GTX shares very similar specifications to that of the GeForce 8800 GTS 512 graphics card. By now, the G92 has been used on numerous Nvidia graphics cards including the GeForce 8800 GS, 8800 GT, 8800 GTS 512, and the 9800 GX2. Keeping this in mind, it will be interesting to see what makes the new GeForce 9800 GX2 special.

Hi!
Today we will look at the high-end graphics card segment of today. This of course includes the just launched GeForce 9800GTX, but also the previously launched 9600GT, and the older cards of the GeForce 8800 series, both G80 and G92-based. They go up against the Radeon HD 3800 and 3600 series, with 3870X2 and 3870 CrossFire at the top of the ladder, 3650 at the bottom and Radeon HD 3870 and 3850 in between. Most of all we’ve made sure to use a test system that will render as few bottlenecks as possible, while also making sure no automatic overclocking features will compromise the results.

“The graphics card market is alive and kicking, and the last two years have been quite exciting. The clock frequencies have gone through the roof, more shaders have been implemented, the manufacturing processes have been refined and the power consumption, and thus the heat dissipation, has been going up and down like a sinus wave.”
