EVGA e-GeForce 8800GT AKIMBO 1GB Video Card Review
Date: 04-29-2008 Written By Benjamin Sun
The EVGA 8800GT 1GB AKIMBO is an interesting card in many respects. The performance is not up to the 9800GTX but it is close being that the two cards share the same video chip just with 16 SPs disabled. The main selling point of this card is the AKIMBO cooling solution as it kept the card noticeably cooler during operation, about 15-20C cooler according to NVIDIA’s temperature monitoring software.

High Powered File Sharing - Free, so I tried it, and…
Posted: 29 Apr 2008 05:31 PM CDT
For a while now, I’ve been looking for a consolidated place to store and share files. Pics, videos, large files — so many needs, so few offerings.
FileDropper came highly recommended, but there was a cost associated. Granted, the basic plan was only $.99 per month, but it’s still a hassle to buy anything on the Internet when there are free alternatives. Then, someone sent me an offer for a Free accounts for bloggers as well as members of Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Mixx, and del.icio.us. It was a sign. I tried it tonight.

Google researchers say they have a software technology intended to do for digital images on the Web what the company’s original PageRank software did for searches of Web pages. On Thursday at the International World Wide Web Conference in Beijing, two Google scientists presented a paper describing what the researchers call VisualRank, an algorithm for blending image-recognition software methods with techniques for weighting and ranking images that look most similar.

BlackBerry’s Quest: Fend Off the iPhone
Posted: 29 Apr 2008 05:32 PM CDT
STEVE JOBS, Apple’s chief executive and field general, has Napoleonic dreams of global conquest for his 10-month-old wonder gadget, the iPhone. So it may be fitting that he’s encountering his most serious resistance in a city called Waterloo.
That is where, 70 miles west of Toronto in Ontario, 19 nondescript, low-rise office buildings comprise the headquarters of Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry.

“Back in January at the 2008 CES, Logitech introduced five new products which would be released in the coming months. Among those products was the diNovo Mini Palm-sized Keyboard, which was an Honoree in the Best of Innovations at the show. The diNovo Mini looked extremely promising at the show, with its TouchPad and full QWERTY keyboard, and we have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to review it for you all.“

TITLE: Samsung SyncMaster 245BW Widescreen LCD Monitor @ Benchmark Reviews
DESCRIPTION: We have spent a lot of time at Benchmark Reviews talking about video cards recently - and with good reason. The discrete graphics segment of the market is currently afire with many outstanding price-to-performance options. When we looked at the offerings from the two biggest players, the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX and ATI/AMD HD 3870, we saw that game performance even when scaled to high resolution was simply outstanding. This begs the question; why with such low-cost entrance into owning cards capable of “high-rez” gaming, most users are still running a display of 19″ or less?Monitors are arguably the most important component for users, getting more usage than any other component of a PC. The only reasonable answer would have to be cost, as until recently displays above the 19″ mark have been prohibitively expensive. That’s where the SAMSUNG SyncMaster 245BW enters the scene as very attractively priced 24″ widescreen LCD monitor.

OCZ Quad 2Gb Memory Kit Review - 8Gb of Platinum Goodness
With the introduction of Vista, 2 GB of memory suddenly seems insufficient. Many people have made the jump to 4 GB lately, but on a 32Bit operating system, more is definitely overkill. Today we happen to have a 64 bit operating system installed on our test system, so there’s no stopping us from fully loading our P35 motherboard with… 8 GB of memory. And we even managed to overclock it!

Title: Gigabyte AirCruiser GN-WI06N-RH @ Phoronix
Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12303
Summary: “Last month we had looked at the Gigabyte AirCruiser N300 GN-WI30N-RH 802.11n WiFi adapter. The wireless adapter uses the Ralink RT2860 chipset, which doesn’t have a Linux driver in the kernel, but we were able to easily get this 802.11n wireless adapter working with Ubuntu when using ndiswrapper and the Windows driver. Today we have our hands on the Gigabyte AirCruiser N300 Dual GN-WI06N-RH, which is a PCI Express Mini-Card with dual-band 802.11a/b/gn support. How well does this Atheros-based WiFi card work on Linux? We’ll tell you in this review.”

CPU3D Review: Abit AX78 Motherboard (AMD 770)
Using AMD’s 770 chipset, Abit AX78 is aimed at the mainstream/budget market. It’s compatible with all AM2/AM2+ processors, and offers support for DDR2 ram and Hyper Transport 3.0 technology. We put it through the test and compare this chipset against its other sibblings … the AMD 790FX and the AMD 780G chipsets.
“After taking a quick look at the Abit AX78, I thought that it was a good all-rounder. For an AMD 770 based motherboard, it performs just below the AMD 790FX, and produced results as expected from a mainstream chipset.”

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 - PSP Review
Date: 04-28-2007 Written By Vlad Mihaiescu
First of all, the game excluded multiplayer mode, and although there are quite a few successful games that include single player mode only, a sports game will not be successful taking that approach. Most of my friends for example will not even glance at a sports game without multiplayer. Konami, further shot itself in the foot by jumping the gun and releasing Pro Evolution Soccer without proofreading the final product (the game has sections that do not function properly or at all, such as the unplayable penalty mode or the completely vestigial snow/dry environments.

“USB CopyNotify! (£67.99, monitors 10 PCs) plugs the data leak that takes place in most offices due to unauthorised usage of USB devices, such as phones, cameras and MP3 players. Flash drives are a particular threat because they are so small that they are easily carried into the office, plugged into a computer and used to copy confidential data without detection, thus making established data security measures vulnerable. While there is lots of software that takes care of data security and theft of confidential data, these products are probably too complicated and bloated for small companies with limited IT staff. USB CopyNotify! is simple to install and manage and doesn’t require network security policies, access and control policies, active directories or domain controllers. In other words, it’s aimed at the small-business user who is data security conscious but doesn’t have the time, money or expertise for sophisticated network management and control.”

As a computer geek, there have been times, where I needed a long run of USB cable. However, most standard USB cables measure from four to eight feet in length. What if you needed a longer stretch of USB cable? Well, the folks at USBFever have the perfect solution for this dilemma. If you have a spare Cat5e or Cat6 cable lying around, then the USB 2.0 Extension Cable to Cat5e or Cat6 Extender Adapter is the solution to your USB connection problems. This device allows you to create a USB extension cable essentially limited only by the length of the Cat5e or Cat6 cable used. The maximum length is 150 feet, but seriously, if you need to hook up a USB device a 150 feet away, maybe you should not be using that type of device.

First-of-Its-Kind 6-month Research Project Establishes Effects of Puzzle and Word Games on the Human Body and Mind
GREENVILLE, N.C. and SEATTLE, April 28 /PRNewswire/ — East Carolina University’s Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies today revealed the results of a six-month long, randomized, controlled study that measured the stress-relieving and other mood-lifting effects of so-called “casual” video games. The three puzzle and word games used in the study, Bejeweled(R) 2, Peggle(TM) and Bookworm(TM) Adventures, are all made by PopCap Games, the leading developer and publisher of casual video games. (PopCap underwrote the study and provided copies of the games for research purposes.) The hypotheses were tested using state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies to measure heart-rate variability (HRV), electroencephalography (EEG) and subjects’ mood states pre- and post-activity (POMS). The study yielded significant findings in several areas while identifying potential therapeutic applications of casual games as a means of addressing serious mental and physical disorders. Due to the significance of the findings and their implications in health promotion, disease prevention and treatment, East Carolina University’s Psychophysiology Lab is planning to start clinical trials in the fall to determine the efficacy of these games and their prescriptive parameters.

Title: Corsair Flash Voyager GT 16GB @ Phoronix
Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12286
Summary: “For years now Corsair has been on the forefront of leading flash drive innovations, which started with their Flash Voyager series but quickly expanded into their Flash Voyager GT, Flash Survivor GT, and Flash PadLock series. We’ve reviewed them all and Corsair has certainly had some talented engineers working on these products from the Flash Survivor GT that withstood being submerged into the bottom of a pool, being boiled in a pot of water, and beaten by a hammer to the Flash PadLock, which has a physical lock that will present the flash drive from being mounted unless the appropriate key sequence is entered. While they continue to face new competition — primarily from OCZ Technology, which has many different innovative flash drives as well such as the Rally 2 Turbo, ATV Turbo, and Mega-Kart — Corsair Memory continues to excel and release new flash products. Corsair’s latest additions to their Flash Voyager GT family are 16GB and 32GB editions. At hand today we are looking at the Corsair Flash Voyager 16GB USB 2.0 flash drive.”
