ATI HD 2600 Pro 256MB Video Card Reviewed @ TheTechLounge

Title:

ATI HD 2600 Pro 256MB Video Card Reviewed @ TheTechLounge

Quote:

“ATI’s HD 2600 XT is a pretty nice card.  It plays games acceptably well, consumes a negligible amount of power, and has flawless video acceleration.  It’s my first choice for the mainstream.  So where does that leave the HD 2600 Pro?  Being a cut-down, budget version of a cool card, what, then, is missing? The HD 2600 Pro is targeted to anyone who wants a discreet video card, the casual gaming ilk, but doesn’t really want either the lowest-end model or to spend over a hundred dollars.  All that seems reasonable, but it’s just not true.  I think the GDDR3, 256MB HD 2600 Pro should be skipped altogether.  It does a couple things right, but misses the mark too often.”

Lite-On LH-20A1S 20x DVD+/- RW Drive Review @ OCIA.net

January 14th, 2008 by Kristofer

OCIA.net has posted their review of the Lite-On LH-20A1S 20x DVD+/- RW Drive.  Below is a direct quote from the review:

With all of this ballyhoo about HD-DVD-this and Blu-Ray-that, it’s easy to forget that regular old DVDs and even our old faithful CDs are still quite posh. Not only is your box nearly unusable without some sort of compact disc reader for software, but most forms of entertainment such as movies and music still sells predominantly on these “old” formats of DVD and CD.

Gigabyte 3D Mercury Water Cooled Case @ Phoronix

January 14th, 2008 by Kristofer

Title: Gigabyte 3D Mercury Water Cooled Case @ Phoronix
Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=11693
Summary: “Water cooling used to be a very daunting task for all but the
most experienced enthusiasts. It required time, dedication, and
knowledge of many different types of components, and installing them in
an orderly, professional matter was a very time consuming process. Many
have simply jumped ship, including me, and returned to air-based cooling
solutions over the past years. But nowadays, water cooling is becoming
more and more accessible. Just about every vendor involved in the
cooling business provides all-in-one systems, 5.25″ bay contraptions,
and integrated case solutions. Today we have Gigabyte’s 3D Mercury
integrated water-cooling case for review. The 3D Mercury is built around
Gigabyte’s 3D Galaxy water cooling system but is built into a large
chassis that is compatible with even Extended ATX motherboards.”

Digit-Life Review: Apple iPod nano 3G

    January 14th, 2008 by Kristofer

Digit-Life Review: Apple iPod nano 3G

    Excerpt:
“The iPod nano 3G has come to replace the popular second generation on September 5, 2007. When we saw a photo of the iPod nano 3G for the first time, we had an impression that the player became much larger. It can be explained with the position and size of the traditional click wheel-this wheel was almost as wide as the device itself in previous models, but now there is plenty of space at the sides, which creates an illusion of a wider player.”

Digit-Life Review: Corsair DOMINATOR TWIN3X2048-1800C7DFIN G Memory Modules

    January 14th, 2008 by Kristofer

Digit-Life Review: Corsair DOMINATOR TWIN3X2048-1800C7DFIN G Memory Modules

    Excerpt:
“This article begins a new series of reviews devoted to DDR3 memory modules. In this article we’ve tested Corsair DOMINATOR TWIN3X2048-1800C7DFIN G Memory Modules on a platform based on an Intel Core 2 processor and an Intel X38 chipset with 333 MHz FSB. This platform can provide memory performance on the level of DDR2-800 and lower, so DDR2-1066 and faster DDR3 memory is redundant here. In practice, reality is full of surprises, which may change our categoric attitude formed by theoretical data. That’s what we’ll do in this article.”

Japanese - 33 million pixel TV Standard

    January 14th, 2008 by Kristofer

    BHFO.org Press Release

    Summary:

Japanese - 33 million pixel TV Standard: This article talks about the Communications Ministry of Japan investing 300 million dollars into a new broadcast technology slated for launch in 2015.

    Here is the article:

“Americans are still stumbling today to upgrade their ailing televisions to HD standards. Many do not realize that their friendly broadcast over the waves is about to change. As America pushes the Hi-Def deadline back, the Japanese are pushing forward with plans to drop their “Hi-Vision” standard pioneered by NHK, who is a Japanese broadcaster . The Hi-Vision technology was also used on the JAXA moon mission. The communications ministry is pouring 300 million yen into the NHK project to develop and launch a higher quality 33.2 million pixel broadcast standard by 2015. Due to the ailing USD, that is 2.735 million dollars.

The broadcast standard will be able to travel along 260 kilometers of fiber optic cable and carry 16 different wavelength signals. The total bandwidth they have achieved in tests is 24 gigabit. Back in 2003 and 2005 NHK demonstrated the “Super-Hi-Vision ” technology. Back then, there were 16 HDTV recorders hacked together recording 18 minutes of footage. They took the resultant 3840 × 2048 image and “upscaled” it through pixel shifting to 7680 × 4320 pixels or 4000 scan lines. Three years later, the project is still advancing and has overcome many of the hurdles they once had.

NHK has also developed a codec to compress the 24Gbps video signal down to 180-600Mbps. The audio is dropped from 28Mbps to 7-28Mbps. Go ahead and read that again, video data rate of 24Gbps and a 24 channel audio data rate of 28Mbps. 18 minutes of video will take up about 3.5 TB of data in a raw format. The image would be more palpable and vibrant than anything we can imagine.  Yahoo news has the AFP” …Chris Hunter

Sony to stop some PS3 shipments in Japan

    Posted: 13 Jan 2008 02:20 AM CST

Sony said it will stop shipments of PlayStation 3 models with 20GB and 60GB hard drives in Japan this month, focusing instead on the 40GB model.

Sony said that this does not mean the 40GB machine will be the only model available in Japan and that it will launch new models to respond to end-user preferences sometime in the future. The 40GB model, launched in November in Japan, sells for $364 (39,980 yen), less than the 20GB machine.

Internet-calling software provider Skype sees the mobile market as the next frontier for its service, but economic realities in the voice market–coupled with mobile operators who feel threatened by Skype–could put the kibosh on large-scale adoption for some time to come.

Skype, a peer-to-peer software application that allows people to make free phone calls to other Skype users over the Internet, has become an easy and inexpensive way for people all over the world to stay in touch.

Thin TVs made with organic light-emitting diodes could become a big hit with consumers, but not any time soon, according to Toshihiro Sakamoto, president of the Panasonic AVC Networks company.

“It will start to grow as a market in 2015,” he said during an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show taking place here this week. “You won’t be able to beat the cost and price performance of LCD and plasma for a long time.”

ASUS Triton 75 CPU Cooler Review @ Virtual-Hideout

    January 14th, 2008 by Kristofer

Title: ASUS Triton 75 CPU Cooler Review @ Virtual-Hideout

    Review link: http://www.virtual-hideout.net/reviews/ASUS_Triton_75/index.shtml

Quote: “Asus offers a myriad of CPU coolers, ranging from fanned, to fans with LED’s, to the silent fan-less models. Most of the coolers are universally compatible with AMD and Intel processors. So, with this many options, what type of cooler will we have in this review? Well, I’m sure you already have a pretty good idea just from the name in the title, but I will still name it fully here. The CPU cooler in the spotlight this time around is the ASUS Triton 75. The Triton 75 is a fan-less CPU cooler that helps dissipates heat away from the core roughly 10% faster than other coolers. The fan-less design allows the end user to choose whatever brand of 120mm fan they want.”
