CES 2008 Day 1 @ ASE Labs

January 8th, 2008 by Kristofer

CES Day 1 is over.

CES 2008 Day 1

” CES is one of the biggest consumer electronics show in the world. Hosted in Las Vegas at the start of the year, the show welcomes well over 100,000 people. During this week, Las Vegas turns into technology town. You really can’t go anywhere without hearing someone talking about HDTV, Bluetooth, Open Source, basically anything technology related. The show lasts four days and it is nearly impossible to see everything that it offers during that time. It really is a large show. ”

Nyko’s Product Lineup at CES 2008 @ OCModShop

January 8th, 2008 by Kristofer

Nyko has been creating inventive and functional third-party console gadgets for years, many times improving on the original manufactuer’s design with a lower price point. Nyko was at CES 2008 showing off some of their new (and not-so-new) products for gaming enthusiasts.

For one, the wireless Nunchuck is the killer device that Nintendo fans have been salivating over since it was announced: the Wireless Nunchuk Controller Attachment for the Wii.

Do I really need to spell out why this controller accessory is so awesome? There are no restrictive wires, allowing for complete freedom while gaming, and is completely compatible with all games that require the standard Nunchuk. (note that Nyko’s Nunchuck has an extra “C” to avoid infringing on Nintendo’s trademark).

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 PSU review @ DVHardware

January 8th, 2008 by Kristofer

DV Hardware published a review of the PC Power Silencer 610W PSU.

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 PSU review

Almost a half year ago I published a review of the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 power supply and today I’m taking a look at the 610W model. The Silencer 610 is less expensive and features a single powerful 49A +12V line, that’s 11A less than the +12V rail of the Silencer 750..

EVGA e-GeForce 8600GTS 256MB 256-P2-N761-AR Video Card Review @ DragonSteelMods.com

January 8th, 2008 by Kristofer

So with the latest bunch of game releases are you noticing that your system just isn’t quite up to the task of playing these games? Is the new 8800 line of video cards just not in your budget, but yet you still need to upgrade to something better? There are budget cards out there that are very capable of running the latest games in DX9 and DX10, of course you’re not going to max the video settings but the games still look great.

I’ve got two EVGA 8600GTS video cards for review today, not quite a budget card but they won’t set you back too much either. They’re quite capable of playing the latest games like Crysis, Gears of War and COD4: Modern Warfare very comfortably and I think most people would be very happy with them. Sure I’d like to own a couple 8800s but it’s not in my budget, so I get what I can afford, cheap but not too cheap! I still like to be able to play games and have them look nice as well.

I went with these specific cards mainly because of the DDR3 that is on them, there are other cards at this price point but not many that have the DDR3 memory. I shopped around quite a bit and did a lot of research before buying them. Originally when I was upgrading my system with the EVGA motherboard I was sort of set on getting the EVGA video cards as well to make it sort of a matched set, but there were others of the same model that were cheaper and I was considering getting those, but in the end after my research I finally decided that the EVGA 8600GTS offered the best bang for the buck.

So continue to see the results of my testing with DX9 and DX10 games and to see if these cards are worth your money or not…

Unleash the Fury @ TechDomain

January 8th, 2008 by Kristofer

Title: Fury PC Game Review @ TechDomain

Quote: There has been a lot of bad press about the Australian developed online PvP game, Fury, by Auran studios. The unfortunate thing is that most of these reviewers appeared to miss the point of what the game is all about. A brief look on the offical Fury forums is all it takes to realise that the Fury community at large is clearly unhappy with this situation. So, what can we, at TechDomain, do to help? The answer was to write a fair review that accurately reflects the state of the game. We’ll be taking a interesting approach to our analysis of this unique title. We thought we would try something different - we invited the Fury community at large to contribute to our latest review, a game which I’ve come to love as a challenging competitive PvP game in a genre of its own. Ultimately, we asked them to Unleash the Fury.
“Has Auran opened a dating site? No, Fury’s match maker is there to match you with players of similar skill to make the arenas both enjoyable and challenging.”

OCZ 2×1GB DDR3-1333 Gold Edition Memory Kit Review @ Virtual-Hideout

January 8th, 2008 by Kristofer

Title: OCZ 2×1GB DDR3-1333 Gold Edition Memory Kit Review @ Virtual-Hideout

Review link: http://www.virtual-hideout.net/reviews/OCZ_DDR3-1333_Gold/index.shtml

Quote: “Since some users don’t need the lower latencies, higher latencies can afford them a bit more avid performance at lower price. A good case and point is the new OCZ DDR3-1333 Gold Edition 2GB Dual Channel Memory Kit. OCZ has obviously been paying attention to the market comments and has done something to help their fans that are looking to make the move to DDR3. It isn’t that there aren’t many DDR3 kits to choose from, it’s more that there aren’t a great deal of DDR3 boards circulating yet. And there hasn’t been a large enough performance boost from DDR3 boards that can draw people out to spend that pretty penny required to upgrade their motherboard and memory kit to tap in to their Core 2 Duo’s hidden potential.”

Gigabyte HD 2600 Pro 512MB @ TheTechLounge

January 8th, 2008 by Kristofer

Gigabyte HD 2600 Pro 512MB @ TheTechLounge

Quote:

“I’ve said before that the HD 2600 Pro should be passed over in favor of the XT for anyone who wants to play video games, or the HD 2400 XT for people just interested in having a discrete graphics card without all that gaming malarkey. But then, Gigabyte has put together a compelling package with the HD 2600 Pro.  A memory bump to 512MB, a clockspeed bump of 5%, passive cooling, component and S-Video out, and Neverwinter Nights 2—a popular sequel by a big developer.”
